Update: 2024 X5 M60i 4x4 Drivetrain malfunction

Hello,
New X5 M60i week 26 build with less than 1,000 miles just gave a 4x4 malfunction error. Currently on a road trip in Nashville about 550 miles from home and just received this I-drive message which was also sent to my phone.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

Any advice?

Thanks, Matt

Update

I made an appointment at local Nashville dealer for the morning. Hopefully I’ll learn more in the morning and hopefully they can correct the issue.

I’m being told my 3 week old 2024 BMW X5 M60i needs a new Transfercase!!!!! I’m 550 miles from home. Have to rent a car to get back home. It is questionable whether they are gonna send my car back to Michigan!!

Any guidance from the forum?

Thanks

Update on our three week old 2024 X5 M60i with Drivetrain malfunction. Our vehicle is stuck at Nashville, Tn dealer. We had to rent a vehicle to get back home to Michigan. Latest update we’ve received is that after several back and forth communications from dealer and BMW NA with failing diagnostic tests is that they want the dealer to replace the control module for the Transfercase short of changing out the Transfercase at this time. Problem is there are no control modules in the US or Germany to be installed in our three week old vehicle. Further, if that doesn’t correct the issue Transfercase will have to be replaced. Looking at a long interval without our brand new $100k plus vehicle.

The kicker is this was our boat tow vehicle. So now, can’t use our boat.

Obviously very frustrated.

They wouldn't provide you a loaner vehicle?!

Update: We made it home yesterday evening to Michigan. Have to return the rental car today, so we’ll be down a vehicle. I reached out to local Dealer where I purchased and I’m waiting to hear back. Also, reached out yesterday again to BMW na and our case worker hasn’t gotten back to us. Obviously won’t have a vehicle for going to work on Monday. On a mellow positive note, I received word yesterday, Friday, from Nashville service manager that they did locate the module in Iowa and should receive it and install it by midweek this upcoming week. So, hopefully this corrects the issue with my vehicle. Then have to work on getting it shipped up to Michigan. If it doesn’t fix it then I guess looking at a further wiring issue as some have suggested or new transfer case with unknown timeline.

Update Final: My vehicle is fixed and it made it’s way back from Nashville Tennessee on an enclosed trailer. They replaced the Drivetrain module. They drove it for 88 miles on three different occasions before giving it the all clear. It was 15 days at the dealer and arrived back in Michigan on day 16. After many escalations with BMW Na we were able to get a good faith check of $1000 for our troubles. They are reimbursing the rental we had from Nashville to Michigan under the Trip interruption program. Everything seems to be all good with the vehicle. 🙏

Certainly not in any way comparable to your ordeal but my transfer case also went bad on a 2020 M50i with only 26k miles. Its a $6k replacement (under warranty at this time). The service advisor mentioned that he's seen this before and be careful as the car falls out of warranty. Wondering how normal this is? And if its something that is a known issue that may be reoccurring. Debating the future of this car now.

Glad BMW made good on yours. Sucks the life out of what should be exciting for you.

I am terribly sorry to hear that. That is absolutely ridiculous. Positive note, you were not stranded away from home. And dealer should definitely be given you a loaner. Demand comparable one

Hi,

Received the feedback from dealer today: transfer case to be changed... on a 20 miles brand new car... Anyway, it will take 1 week and hopefully definitely solve the issue. The dealer will give me a M240i until the work in done on the X5.

Well, sorry to hear that it’s that involved which is what they told me initially but ended up just changing the module and seems to have been the fix for mine. This is truly unacceptable on a new vehicle. But might as well try and enjoy the m240i

What was your build week out of curiosity?

Your service advisor sees the BMW repair world on a daily basis. He is telling you that you do not want to own a BMW out of warranty.
I never keep a vehicle 4 years and would not own any late model vehicle with an expired warranty. We turn over vehicles every 12-36 months that is fun and avoids any of the bombshell repair costs which are common on aging cars/SUVs.

Breaking news: my M60i has been repaired... and today, after 500 miles, same error message again. I'm a bit upset here. So tomorrow, once again, I will go to the dealer and see what's next...

Turn car off restart if no errors continue your journey. If it was just on your phone, I wouldn’t pay attention to it. Especially if the car is driving normal.

I typically do the same thing that way I’m not responsible and I don’t need an extended warranty

That's what I would do, but for sure if I do so and do not go to the dealer asap, if for any reason in the future anything else goes wrong, I'm pretty sure BMW will say "Hey, you had an error message X days / months etc.. ago, why did you ignore it? Warranty is then not valid anymore...", you know this kind of stuff. I have a good friend working at the dealer, and he keep me inform of the status and give me some nice cars in replacement (next one will be a convertible 4 series). But anyway, it's the last time I bring my brand new 125k€ X5 at the dealr for this issue. If this occur once again, I will check with a lawyer to advise BMW they will have to give me another one or refund.

Exactly. This is the longest I’ve ever had a car - at 3-1/2 years but with only 29k miles figured it was safe. Sold it yesterday and now awaiting an M60 that’s scheduled to be built Thursday. Hoping it turns out better than OP. This sounds insane.

My M60i is about 10 weeks old and flawless, best vehicle of this type we have had to date and have had many of them.
Hope it goes well for you and enjoy, you will love the new S68 TTV8.

Hi there. Some news about the issue with my X5: in fact, no news, car is still at the dealer for almost 3 weeks now and BMW did not even replied to the emails I've sent to custonmer service. Even the incident report sent by my dealer has only been reviewed after more than a week with feedback explaining which parts need to be replaced by without any timeline on the availibility.... So I will have a meeting with the dealership director in the coming days to find a "friendly" solution and that means a full refund for me! It's just a shame the way BMW is dealing with its customers! So more to come...
