Sounds like you’re part of the small demographic that needs an X5M.

Normally I’d agree but that approach has burned me on BMWs too many times now, so while I still love them I don’t trust them after 80k miles or so and I bought the last one brand new.

I went in to look at X5M and ended up saying X5 M50i was good enough. I don't disagree with that choice now, the 50i is bonkers fast, and not as compromised as a daily driver as the X5M. If I ever get to a point where the performance of it isn't enough, I'll probably just get a tune and exhaust, but not any time soon.

Agreed. The only way buying new makes sense for me is: a) you're going to keep it for a long time or b) what you want isn't available used. I had no issue buying used 3 series for my DD. The three 3ers accumulated over 200k miles total commuting.

I've bought 10 BMWs over the years and half have been used. No appreciable difference in reliability, but they were all low mileage vehicles. The highest mileage one had 13k miles (2 yo). It was an E70 that we put over 110k miles on it. The oldest was 4 yo with less than 10k miles. I added about 80k miles before trading it. The other three were all under a year old.

If they're all around the same price then 50i, then 40i then X3.

X3 is too small, and the ride is too compromised imo. Doesn't really know what it wants to be.

X5 is a much better daily driver. Comfortable, road presence, and the extra space is invaluable if you have family.

40i is a great engine, but I'm not a fan of the mild hybrid that was introduced. Car feels lighter than the 50i. The 50i is definitely faster, but will have higher running costs and potentially lower reliability compared to the B58.

What do you find issue with on the mild hybrid?

I went shopping in 2022 for an X5 and I wanted an M version but my local dealer had a M50i for sale which was a year old lease and had 13k miles on it. Fully loaded minus the heated/cooled cup holders and alcantara headliner but every other box was checked. The car looked pristine and was a CPO which was a plus. I checked the car inside and out and found absolutely nothing wrong with it, drove it home that same day. Sticker price with options was 98k and I got it for 72k after just a year of ownership. Love the car and it’s been great for the last 14 months, insurance is up there but I was expecting that with the level of car I was buying. Main reason I wanted to buy the M50i or M was that I heard all models moving forward would be mild hybrids and I didn’t want to deal with any hybrid technology at all, I just wanted a powerful V8 before they’re not available at all in this state. Not one regret and the couple things I didn’t like, the cerium grey grill, mirror covers and the fender vents have all been changed to either black or carbon, and the car is perfect in my eyes.

You’re right turtle good catch I was thinking 50e. That V8 would be tempting but nothing beats that new car smell.

The suspension on the LCI was vastly improved with the 2022 X3 M40i. In comfort mode it’s slightly on the stiff side but it’s not even remotely punishing or harsh. In sport it’s a different story. I’ve had X5’s as loaners and agree with most people on here who call the X3 agile and the X5 cushy. Neither is bad it’s just what you like and/or are used to.

Having had an X3 M40i, they are a great package. Stick with the B58 and go the X5 40i IMO

I bought new because the two previous BMW SUVs I owned both needed major engine work (one completely blown) by 70k miles, so I figured I wanted to maximize the enjoyment before the inevitable happened.
