Late to the thread.
Saw the MPE came with exhaust flap, so same activation and thus during crusing no noticeable drone i presume?

AlpineG05 and snickryder - Now that you both have had the M Performance Exhaust for at lease a few months, do you have any updated thoughts on it?

Would you do it again or would you do something else?

M sport exhaust

I have had my MPE for 4 months, and I think it gives the 3.0 liter engine a nice throaty sound.

I've had mine on for 14 months and 16.5k miles. Wouldn't change a thing, it's perfect!

No regrets at all. I received several compliments from the employees at the dealership. I was definitely on the fence because of the price. However, the car sounds so much better.

Thanks alpine. Do you get the crackles/burps or whatever they're officially called. I don't mind them every once in a while, but I think if it happened all the time it would be annoying.

Yes, but only when I'm coming to a dead stop. It's not annoyingly loud. I actually enjoy hearing it.

Yep, that's the only time mine burbles as well. Which is just fine with me. The rest is perfect, and in sport mode with the back seats down it's downright glorious. For an SUV anyway. 😉

Just want to bump this thread a bit because I can't really see a clear answer:

My understanding is: the "M Sport Exhaust System" and "M Performance Exhaust" are two different things, the M50i comes with the M Sport Exhaust System and is not compatible with the M Performance Exhaust, and they're two different (sounding) systems.

Is that correct? Or are they actually the same thing?

I believe that's my understanding as well. MPE is an upgrade, and it has a smaller resonator than the factory MSE set up?

The MPE is for the 40i only and is an upgrade to the factory exhaust system. That's what I have and what I did the research for. So, I can't speak to what is or isn't available for the M50i or what the MSE is or comes on.

TBH it's not loud enough. It's great fun but it'll be more fun with a sport downpipe with HFC's.

It's strange because the website claims it's compatible with the M50i if I choose the car in the dropdown area.

Don't know what website you are referring to. However, all the parts numbers are listed in an earlier post, so you'd be able to see if they fit the 50i. Which I really can't see is possible.

Does anyone know if there is any sort of HP/Torque boost w/the M-Performance Exhaust?
Well, it shouldn't be that hard to compare part numbers. Here's what I ordered:
18-30-2-458-780 - BMW M PERFORMANCE EXHAUST SYSTEM - 40i ENGINE
18-30-9-909-376 - Hex bolt
18-30-7-935-435 - Exhaust system holder
18-30-8-631-988 - Rubber mount

And if it helps, here's what came in the box. Maybe you can do a visual comparison to an X5M exhaust.

As far as additional power from the exhaust, while it's possible, since I had it installed prior to taking delivery I can't really say if there is or isn't. And, without putting it on a dyno, it would all be conjecture anyway.
Does the muffler have any m performance logo on it ? Just curious because that's how you differentiate the difference between stock and m exhaust right ?

Sorry, I just use your pic.
My 2022 vermillion edition came stock with this muffler on sticker it states m sport exhaust[

I personally think it is a little bit louder, but it's not extremely loud nor do, I think it's worth paying for

The biggest difference, now that I've compared the diagrams, is that the M Performance exhaust appears to have removed the front muffler. I'd guess that's the biggest reason that it's louder.
Doesn't it look like the M Performance exhaust has a resonator there in place though?

Linking both:
Stock
https://www.bmwpartshub.com/v-2021-b...ust-components

M Performance
https://www.bmwpartspros.com/p-bmw-m...ne-18302458780

Has anyone taken steps to cut out the resonator on the stock M Sport exhaust to see what it sounds like? Figuring out how to make this sound decent, while keeping things straight-forward and cost-effective.

Context on why I am exploring the cheap route on a not-so-cheap vehicle...

I used to have an Akrapovic exhaust with a catless downpipe on a 4 series - it sounded absolutely glorious - tame when you want, and an animal when in sport. I sold the Akra exhaust as I was planning on selling the car. Bringing the vehicle back to stock meant I had an M performance exhaust while I waited to sell. I was in no real rush to sell, so I had the car for a while and continued to enjoy it. It was super quiet. Way too quiet. No emotion at all. I decided to delete the resonator as an experiment to see how that sounded, given the Akra exhaust didn't have a resonator anyway (easy to revert back to stock be having the resonator welded back in as well).

Outcome: It sounded fantastic after I deleted the resonator, with the M performance exhaust and catless downpipe. Probably 99% the same as when I had the Akra exhaust and catless downpipe.
