What to Check Before Buying CPO?

As the title suggests, what are some possibly lesser-known things to verify or ask about when buying a CPO? Anything specific to the 2020-2023 M50i worth inspecting?

I have asked for the obvious (service history, carfax, CPO inspection checklist, a few car-specific items), but is there anything you wish you had asked prior to purchase?

I searched the forums (and used site:Bimmerpost.com on Google), but apologies if I missed any similar threads.

I would get a pre-purchase inspection. There are many things not covered by the CPO inspection and warranty. It should be worth the couple hundred it may cost you.

IMO, tires are the big ones, as the 21 and 22" tires are pricey. Brake pads/rotors can be pricey depending on your DIY level. They're fairly reasonable if you DIY them, not cheap, but way better than paying for W tondomit.

I don't really know what else would be something that's not just normal stuff to check out (paint condition, interior wear, etc) or covered under warranty.

Thanks, yes I’ve seen that recommended here quite a bit so plan to do that.

That is another topic I searched to little avail—does anyone know the rough lifespan of a set of rotors and pads?

The CPO checklist should have tire tread depth and brake pad thickness.

It will depend on how and where you drive. During "normal" mixed usage you will probably see 75 - 100k miles. That said, we have seen some needing them under 50k with hard usage.

There was a member on here saying at 40k miles they're basically burned through to the minimum rotor thickness.

That said, I agree that brakes pads and rotors should last minimum 50-100k miles.

It does indeed, more just looking for a high level indication of average life in miles (obviously a lot of variables). But I suppose you can just assume an initial thickness of 10-12mm and infer from there based on mileage.

Keep in mind that for CPO purposes the tread depth is measured from the top of the wear bars and not from the bottom of the tread.

Depends on the tire, RFT or non RFT, all season or performance, size, etc. some performance tires have only 8/32” when new. A depth gauge is cheap and you can measure them yourself

Helpful, thank you both!

Thank you and sorry, I should have specified in my response I was referring to brake pad thickness and typical mileage. Tire depth is no problem, I can measure that with my gauge.

Be aware that CPO does not mean it will be perfect. I have heard of CPO cars having been repaired to include new body panels. It is definitely worth hiring someone who is capable of performing an overall inspection of the vehicle. Hopefully the used car manager at the dealership selling the car will be transparent and share the CPO inspection report with you. If not, I would be suspicious. Also, don't depend on a CARFAX to ensure the repair history. Some repairs fail to make it into CARFAX. Good luck with your purchase.

Thanks, those are definitely on my list of things to request from the dealer and review before purchase.

Please check the cosmetics carefully. Check out seat bolsters, curb rash, broken interior trim. I'd check every single storage compartment to make sure the latches are OK. There is a lot of dealer to dealer variation in the cosmetic refurbishment that goes with a CPO. Ask for the CPO inspection worksheet. It's incredibly helpful. Make sure you get both keys and the cargo cover.
