X5 First Service

What is typically included in a first servicing? My X5 is a year old this month and I dropped it off this morning at the dealership for it's first servicing and was told all they do is change the oil. Is this typical? Nothing else needs looking at or dealing with?

They’ll always do the multi point inspection which, if done properly, is a decent look over. The dealership will always be on the lookout for any issues - especially potential warranty issues - puts money in their pocket 👍

Do we need to pay anything for the first services for things like oil change or Cabin filter change?

BMW used to also change the wiper blades, but they no longer include those in the standard service (in the USA) unless you upgrade your plan, but there’s no cost. Most will also check and refill other fluids, if required, such as windshield wiper fluid, brake fluid, coolant, but the main thing is the oil and filter change. In the USA, there is no charge for the first 3-years or 50K miles (?), whichever comes first. Some shops will push you to do a wheel alignment, but except after the first few miles, it is not free. Some also will push you to fill the tires with nitrogen, again, not free. Other than that, it’s mostly just check for something that’s not ‘right’.

If you detail your own vehicle, like myself, take your own "DO NOT WASH!" placard and leave it on the console. The dealer took my previous X3m40i (ceramic coating) through an automatic car wash and I had to redo a full paint correction and ceramic. This was after I told them not to wash AND it said such on the service order. First world problems I know, but still a pain in the...

As already mentioned, just oil and filter change with most doing a multi-point inspection.

In the US at least, the cabin filter is changed every 2nd oil change.

For my M340i, in addition to making sure it is noted on the work order, I print out a couple of these and put one on the dash and one on the passenger seat.

They say they check tire pressure but I don't think my dealer actually does it. I went in knowing the pressure was low by 4-5 lbs and it still was after the service. The box on the list was checked and it makes me wonder about the other items on the inspection.

I keep getting texts that my 2023 with 6K miles is telling them my vehicle is due for service. I only had it for 5 weeks. I just had the oil changed which they supposedly did. I have the invoice. That invoice said they filled the washer fluid. Nope! Got low washer alert as soon as it was driven off the lot. Filled it myself with BMW fluid.
They washed the car but did not wash the roof! Don't trust them.

Typically, the first service is just oil change, but if you plan on keeping this car very long, don’t go 10,000 miles or a year do six months or 5000 miles if you want it to last

I do 10K/1 year and things still working great for the herd. Show an oil analysis that shows otherwise if you're using good oil or not on the track.

Most likely they didn’t change the oil either that’s been my experience with most dealers Do it yourself and you’ll know it’s been done

When I bought the car, I insisted on an oil change since I didn't see any service records in the car fax. When my wife picked up the car she asked again if they did the oil change. They said yes and produced an invoice with an oil change. That invoice said they filled the washer fluid too. I think the invoice was faked.
I had the oil changed at my favorite local shop. They put date and mileage in the idrive. I forgot to ask for an oil sample.

Correct, there is no technical reason to change the oil sooner than CBS recommends. There may be one out there but we have never seen an oil analysis showing that the oil should have been changed sooner.

Some folks get comfort in changing it sooner so it may be worth it to them to do so.

As others have said, and my experience, 1st service was oil and filter only. My dealer does a nice multi-point inspection with a video camera so you actually see them do things like check tire tread depth (and you can see the gauge), check fluid levels, top them up, etc. Nice customer service and “double-check” with the video they send you while the car is there.

At 1 year old 10k miles, I am not sure what else is needed other than oil change. All the so called inspection is like let me take a look. What else do you think should happen?

I had my first service on my 50e today. Mainly oil change, but I mentioned my at times not functioning shortcuts and shutdown of all driving assist features.

I had put the car in Valet mode, but they texted me that they needed my PIN to get it out of Valet to be able to properly Diagnose it.

At the end, they programmed the encoding control unit, head-unit and TCB.

They apparently updated iDrive to 03/2024.35, even so my App stills shows 11/2023.42 and they didn’t mention anything.

Updating iDrive is what they mean by programming.

Thanks for the clarification.

From the Service Advisor it sounded like programming the encoding control unit was a different procedure.

For the Head-Unit and TCB they created a “TSARA CASE 327891769” and followed it’s procedure with a 30 minute sleep period. Can I assume this to be a case with BMWNA to get reimbursed under warranty?

They often do.

A TSARA case means that they requested help from BMW to diagnosis the problem. What happened is that they could not find an SIB that covered your problem so asked for help. If the the BMW engineer authorized the IDrive update then it would be covered by warranty.
