Do I need the Competition Pkg?
Considering an X6M & wanted to get some opinions as to whether the competion pkg is worth the $9K (USD) upgrade.
I do prefer the shawdow line grill but we all know that can be switched out easily. Thanx. |

I didn't like the black trim and wanted smaller wheels. $3.5k of the 9k is for extended leather, other than that its 17 HP which I believe is just boost (you can get from race chip) and the sportier exhaust. So the answer is $5.5k for some subjective black bits, a louder exhaust and bigger wheels. If you want them no reason not to spend the extra $ at this price point. If you don't want them save the $ and get a race chip.

Not the mention the stitching on the seatbelts. That's easily $3.5k worth. :-P. But, it is awesome.

Trim is easily upgraded later or even trumped by carbon if your tastes desire. Seats and extra bracing would cost you significantly after-the-fact. Not to mention, with the DME currently locked, max performance currently obtainable is with a comp (unless you want to accept marginal gains from a piggyback). Once the DME is cracked, hopefully summer, both variants could potentially achieve identical performance (although the stock comp exhaust is still better unless you plan on modded that too) That's my take. It really is an individual decision requiring a sound understanding of the facts prior to commitment. Choose what works best for you!

I don't think there is a need as much as there is a want. If you can afford it, go for it. Best to test drive an M and an MC and decide which ride you like better.

I specifically did not want the competition package because of the large wheels. In NYC 21" wheels are bad enough, I wish they still offered 20" wheels like I had on the previous model.

I test drove a comp, and it was lame as it was still under RIS threshold. Make sure it's beyond that for proper consideration. The car changes significantly as I just discovered.

If you're going to take the time to blatently contradict a fellow forum member, please have your facts straight before doing so. I'm not 100 percent right all the time but make darn sure I am if I'm going to go out of my way to correct someone. The competition variant of the F95 DOES add additional bracing, and consequentially weight, over the non-comp variant. But please don't just take my word for it..... https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...mw-x5-m-drive/ EDIT: The review cited has been discovered to be factually incorrect. I never said the non-comp didn't have strut bracing, but it is different and stiffer. If one prefers a different source.....
https://carbuzz.com/cars/bmw/x5-m/2020 Despite this second source, it would appear that I was WRONG. https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1667526 The F97 I previously owned had definitely different bracing between comp and non-comp variants, but this appears NOT to be the case with the F95. The bigger tires on the comp do contribute to a stiffer ride, but that has nothing to do with the bracing. I stand corrected despite having formed my opinion from two independent sources. . My apologies. I thought I had my facts straight from multiple sources. Turns out that wasn't the case. Thanks for setting me straight. Last edited by MrItaly; 03-28-2021 at 10:52 PM.. |

One real regret abt not going the Competition route is Michelin’s are only available on the staggered wheel setup. They don’t even make appropriately sized rears if you wanted to pay up after the fact. That said it sounds like it’s a bit of a lottery even if you spring for 22” rears.

I actually didn’t test drive. I’ve owned enough M vehicles to know what to expect. I just knew I liked the look of the competition version so that’s what I bought. When I went to the dealership, it was just to sign the paperwork and drive off. All negotiation done thru email and text beforehand.

Run in service due after your first 1200 miles. You get a different oil, fresh diff fluids, and my service reps say the unlock the DME for higher performance. I know that wasn't true on the F97, although there were rumors that it was. Not sure what the ground truth is on this car. Regardless, post RIS, you can take it all the way to redlines and definitely enjoy it more.
