First oil change - post break in? Or factory prescribed?

Curious - do most folks here wait until they’ve reached the factory prescribed 10k mile/1Year milestone to change their oil? Or do you change it sooner (on your own dime)?

I changed the oil out on all my vehicles at 3K miles - including my last E70...

I do the full 10k or damn near. I'll send my oil to Blackstone labs too and post the results

Yep - I’m thinking this may be my first ride that I wait until the factory prescribed...

I may change mine early. I have always done this and all my keeper vehicles last forever. All my 911's have had the oil changed at the 3k mark after break in. After this long trip I just did, I probably will change the 50i's oil at the 5k mark. I am at 2400 now. It will be warm by then. Funny enough the 50i uses about the same amount of oil as my 911's. Its just a case of oil and filter.

Do you send a sample to Blackstone by chance? I'd like to see how it compares to one done at the prescribed interval

Once a year unless the car or factory tells me to do it sooner.
Never had a problem since synthetic oil became the norm. 3 of my old BMWs and 2 Porsches sold to friends or people who became friends after the sale and most are at the 150K + mark with no engine problems which could be remotely attributed to oil.

In Europe, oil inspection is happening every 18-20k miles. I've never heard about more oil related problems in Europe vs. US.

However, I had the engine replaced (under extended warranty - thanks god I bought this) in my E70 35d here in the US.

Did you change it earlier at the dealership or at an independent shop? If at the dealership, do you pay for it? Or they just count it as one of the free services that come with the new car?

Lease or Buy?
Lease, whenever the car tells you.
Buy, I do one at 1k miles, then every 5.

Every 5K; in my opinion, 10K is too long. Some may contend it is a waste of money, and perhaps it is, but I look at it as preventative maintenance. Of sorts.

That said, notwithstanding personal preference, other factors should be taken into consideration such as driving pattern (short trips vs. frequent highway driving) as well as climate conditions (extreme cold vs. very hot).

As an engineer I can tell you it really depends on how you drive. Full synthetic oils can do over 10k miles easily but should last at least 7-8k out of the 10k under hard driving. I've yet to see any issues doing 8-10k oil changes

Changing oil yourself

OK, I am a new owner of a 2019 X5, and a first time owner of a BMW. I have always changed the oil on my vehicles; I'm somewhat of a fanatic about this. When I asked the 'genius' about the procedure to do this on the X5, he strongly suggested that I bring the car in for them to do it because it is 'tricky'. There is nothing in the user's manual either, aside from references to BMW Longlife oil.

Is this really a challenging procedure on this car and do you need to use 'BMW longlife oil' vs a comparable (API, viscosity, etc.) off-the-shelf synthetic?

thanks.

Waiting until 10K is OK (according to my experience with GTI) but make sure you check the oil level regularly after 5K and add oil if you noticed any reduction (which from what I and some of my friends experienced happens quite often).

I agree and since I am leasing mine it will be changed when BMW tells me it is time and they pay.

I'd use their oil as long as you're under the 4/50 just to be safe. I've looked around the engine bay, BMW really wanted to make life difficult compared to my E46/E90 cars. With those cars, I just used a mityvac topside extractor through the dipstick and the oil filter was properly placed front and center. Changing oil back then didn't require jacks at all! Now, there's no dipstick and the oil filter is placed at the far rear of the engine along with it bent at a weird angle. Will likely require U-joint or a wobble extension... Since the oil filter housing is very tilted, you'll be guaranteed to spill a bit of oil as you spin it off also

GJ BMW!

I'm still trying to decide on whether to do a break in oil service on our G05. It's purchased so I'm researching like crazy on what previous gen cars did longevity wise with the B58 motor with 10K changes. The 15K that was recommended previously on my E46/E90 was just way too long.

dont know about the 40i but the 50i couldn't get any easier. Oil plug in the middle and filter about 8inches away facing down and about flush with the pan. Topside dipstick and oil fill within reach. I do have a lift but driving on a couple boards and you would have room.

I saw that. Much much easier than the B58. You literally have to find a way to move the auxiliary cooling tank without spilling it, or you have to remove the coolant and then remove the hoses attached to it just to get the filter. That's not going to be good for BMW's notoriously fragile hoses and clamps.

New X5 owner, do all my own oil changes and will after my 3 free ones have been exhausted. Question: How do you remove the engine vanity cover. Just pull up on front and back? Or does the back slide in to a receiver? The front of the cover pulls up fine.
