My older brother who married a doctor gave her a $20k wedding ring. He actually makes more money than her too.

My younger brother spent ~$10k on a ring. He's your average Joe like you and I (no MBA, no doctor wife, etc.)

I'm still holding out

Jeweler said that this produces flawless a diamond; hence it's too good to be true. The certain flaws within actually give real diamond some value, according to him.
*SOME* value does not justify the grotesque amount of markup by the ever so famous diamond importer. You're better off with an actual precious stone, which is truly rare.

That's very true. The diamond trade is truly disgusting.

I've never been a stone guy, probably for the better. Always focused on the weight of the metal, than the ice.

But it don't get me HYPE son. Like that Kanye stuff was cool back when I thought it was cool to appreciate hip-hop and wanted a message, but now I just want to drive around in my peepee yellow M car and blast ignorant, immaculately produced rap.

My girl and I sort of have the same mentality when it comes to stuff like this: Make it nice, regardless of price. Spend the money on an experience, not on a thing. Meaning, The ring is a representation of your love, and the tyranny of the West (according to the way the sidebar comments are going on this thread). So save yourself a ton of money on a ring and spend it on a kick ass honeymoon

No, but I do wipe with some old stock certificates. Much softer than these new $100 bills.

Rocky has yet to disappoint. Liking what Ferg's been putting out lately, hopefully his album delivers.

If you like A$AP, give Flatbush Zombies a try. Their newest album reminds me of Illamatic and Reasonable Doubt.

I've seen them in passing on 2dopeboyz, I'll definitely give them a listen.

Idiot for not spending enough? FTL.

I spent $1,200 on the ring (still in college), since I bought the ring, I did not have enough money for a new Beretta Shotgun that I had been wanting...she in return gave me the gun!

For our 20th wedding anniversary, I "upgraded" her diamond ring but that was only to a nice $5k ring (I also have a friend that owns a jewelry store )...FWIW, if I did the 3 month salary thing now it would far exceed your friends $50k ring.

Its not about keeping up with the Jones...

Her best friend got married last year and she mentioned that her ring was $50k. That's completely overkill and absurd to me, just absolutely insane. I know the rule of thumb has supposedly been about three months pay, but even that is pretty far less than what her expectations are. For those of you who are married/engaged, can you ballpark me about how much you spent? Either in cash or in an amount relative to income.
As most guys ever say, if she really loves you, ring cost isn't a issue.

My buddy spent about 5k on his, and his wife was happy and pissed at the same time because he spent so much on her, she said she would be happy with less.

I'll share a story about this topic as I only recently went through this....

I pretty much told my gf (wife now) that she can get whatever ring she wants. She comes from a well off family as well and has always had everything. Knew how I was spending money on cars, watches etc. We went ring shopping and I liked a ring that was around $15K (way less than my 3 month income fyi) for her and showed it to her. She liked it as well but wanted to keep looking. Ended up getting a ring that at the end cost $5K (her choice). Even then, she wanted to think about it and 'sleep on it' cause it was a lot of money. I ended up getting that one for her and she couldn't have been happier.

Even now, she sees me spend money on stupid stuff (watches, car etc) and I offer her to buy bags/jewellery etc and she still doesn't want any of that stuff. Just likes shoes a lot and even those won't spend exorbitant money on brands and I have to sometimes just forcefully get things for her.

Anyway, moral of the story is; like others have said, the price shouldn't really matter. But if she's only happy with something that's over a certain price limit, it may be something to think about. Anyway good luck OP, hope it goes well.
