The peak of M division was with the E39 M5 and E46 M3; at least in my opinion.

E39 M5 was groundbreaking for sure. Square HP/Torque numbers, manual, in such a perfect chassis. What other sedan of that era was clocking 4.5 0-60. None I think.

It's hard to create groundbreaking vehicles these days. Perhaps because so much competition. I'm trying to think if my x6m is groundbreaking. It sure is bat shit crazy performance with a polarizing look. I don't think BMW has the patent at bat shit crazy SUVs as I had nitrous in my K-5 Blazer in the 80s. In subsequent Suburbans, too. Why not!

So maybe it is...maybe not, but all I know is I look forward to nearly every mile in it, it can easily deliver performance that exceeds my marginal driving skills, and seems to deliver on the majority of the M philosophy as explained in this documentary.

Loved my E46 M3. It was my first "brand new car" I ordered from the factory and tracked its progress to me.
