2022 BMW x5 M50i - U0284 - Active Grille Error

Howdy Everyone!

Been a lurker on the forum for a bit and wanted to pass along something I learned today but have yet to find in various BMW forums.

A few weeks ago I got a check engine light and a wrench along with a "drivetrain" error message on Idrive. I connected to the OBDII port and read the code which was U0284. I have not found anything that associates that code with a BMW product but I attempted some light troubleshooting (cleared codes, pulled negative battery lead to reset car, etc...) with no luck.

Made an appointment with BMW and learned that a rock had lodged between some of the lower active grille blades . This rock (which I never saw) caused a fuse to blow and made the actuator blades stick open, thankfully. The service tech told me that this is only the second time he has seen this.

Easy fix though as they removed the rock and replaced the fuse. I wish they told me the fuse # exactly but I was not able to get that information. Part number is 61-13-6-917-401 so it has to be a 5a fuse somewhere.

Hopefully this helps someone in the future but I equally hope that no one has to deal with that. Seems like a design flaw to me personally but lets all hope it doesn't happen again

Better to blow a fuse than to burn out the motor trying to close the shutters!

Useful info.

Could not agree more! I was fearful it was the actuator since that's what google somewhat points you towards.
