My xc90 lease will be up early next year. It’s mostly been a good car, but I won’t be getting another one.

I chose the xc90 because it looked good, had a great interior, great tech, it is well packaged (good interior ******* and i needed a family hauler.

What I hadn’t realized is how important to me it is to have a car that I enjoy driving. The xc90 driving experience doesn’t hold a candle to the f15 I came from, and certainly not to the g05. The engine, the handling, the ride and the general feeling of solidity are way behind bmw.

Those things won’t be important to everyone, and if they’re not, the Volvo is an excellent choice. For me though, even if a comparably specced x5 was $30k more than an xc90, I’d take the bmw every time.

Same thoughts here. In the one day I have had my X5 I know 100% I made the right choice in leaving the XC90. The X5 is so much more engaging to drive while still being as comfortable and quieter. It's just a better engineered car.

The XC90 interior is still one of the best though!!!

Funny thing is - Volvo has made good engines and has put them in decent cars. Polestar v60 is a fun wagon with the right parts.

Why not make a performance version of x90?

Because Volvo vowed in 2017 to not produce anything bigger than a 4 cylinder going forward.

I seriously considered x90 because of the amazing safety record of the 1st gen x90(a such old design passed the lastest small-overlap collision test when that standard just came out, which all BMW at that time that probably was 10 years newer design failed). I thought it would be good choice as a family car. But then came the 4 cylinder only new X90. No way I am buying a 60K car with 4 cylinder, 2 liters, just no way. I always wonder how many orders Volve lost because of this silly 4 cylinder decision.

I'm not talking M3 level performance , but something to compete with x7 50 or GLS 550.

XC90 T8 has 400 hp, but definitely does not handle like a BMW. I have not driven the GLS 550. There is definitely opportunity to compete.

X5 is a drivers SUV, Volvo is an appliance.
