8.5 Upgrade to iDrive on X5 50e
I took my 50e in for the iDrive 8.5 upgrade and another recall issue for some tank plug that no one at the dealer ship could explain what it was. But the real issue is that now instead of my car charging to 49 to 50 miles of battery life (100%), it now only charges to 44 miles of battery life (100%). That's more than a 10 percent loss in a car that has 2500 miles on it. Of course, BMW Genius, BMW Roadside and BMW Dealership all responded "duh"......
I'm becoming very disenchanted with my decision to buy my 1st BMW. |

I don't think you lost range, maybe they polished how the estimation works. It shouldn't give you 50. Real life driving amongst us owners of a 50e get around 40 miles.

My 50e overstated range on full charge when I first picked it up. The car is constantly learning and soon the range slowly adjusted to reflect the way I drive the car. I do not think it is an 8.5 thing as my estimated range did not change when the software was upgraded to 8.5. Mine had about 2300 miles currently. I charge to 90% and get right around 40 miles estimated range. The point is, it changes depending on how I have been driving and the current m/kwh average.

A s/w update erases the history, so the estimated range calculation must start over. Basically, it's based on the last 18-miles you traveled, and unless the next 18-miles are EXACTLY the same, temperature, roads, grades, speeds, stops, a/c, heat, etc., the range you actually get could be greater or less.
You need to stop obsessing over the estimated range...it's no different from the estimate you get from the ICE...drive a long distance using the cruise on the interstate, the estimated range will be way up there...switch to stop and go in the city, it will fall precipitously. |

I just did a 52 mile round trip with about 75% of it at highway speeds. Typically, the ICE starts for a minute or two on the return. App shows .3 gallons used. I’m seeing 47-52 miles estimated at 100% charge on the My BMW app. At 1498 total miles tank shows 52% full FWIW.

What others have said: the range is based on historical data.
You now have a new set of data (or since it's brand new software, not much data at all). Range amount is not an indicator of a full charge; the percentage charged is (100%). Think about it: your range could say 50 miles electric, and you could leave your garage and drive up a steep mountain in electric only...you'd never get 50 miles doing that. Drive it some more, let the software learn. |
