Tips to get courtesy iDrive 8.5 upgrade at dealer

Anyone have any direct experience with what seems to convince your dealer to perform the upgrade for you (outside of being in for other service)? I have discussed with the SA consistent issues with seat memory and volume control, but that didn’t seem to convince.

What issues — demonstrable or just perceived — have seemed to convince your dealers?

I know, I know — I’m impatient when it comes to tech upgrades! Like the new toys!

There doesn't seem to currently be any specific issues that will do the trick. Sounds like yours won't do it unless there us one that is attached to an SIB saying an update would fix it. Might be best anyways since we are seeing some 8.5 problems, they should be worked out by the time the OTAs start.

Thanks. Yeah patience is logical. Just not my strong suit.

How about just go to the dealer you buy the car from and straight up ask for them doing you a favour?

One thing to consider is Id 8.5 seems to drop CarPlay connection once a while for me and at least another person on the forum. It refuse to reconnect but a hard reboot of idrive fix it, while before update never had the issue.

I have asked. No favors/favors being granted it seems.

My SA said BMW will not pay them to do the upgrade. If you pay instead they will probably do it. My shop’s rate is $180/hour so it might be $500-$1000 to do it.

Otherwise a free OTA update is in September.

Yeah. I’m impatient but not $500-1000 impatient. Particularly for the non-overhaul / non-feature-rich update. I’m just one of those day one updaters on my phone and computers… so this is taking some restraint.

I just had to directly work on the service director. No BS excuse about the car will make them do it. Just gotta influence the service director

Almost delivery day and now I get the message I must pay for the 8.5 update.
Or I must bring the car in for service or another problem and then they can do the upgrade for free and under warrany. If I pay for it I can keep paying for it when there are problems because then I wouldn't have warranty?
Really BMW... The cars get 8.5 out of factory now. Is it to much asked for that new cars being prepped for delivery get 8.5...

BTW isn't OTA always a version behind?

They also mentioned there are Carplay related bugs in 8.5.

Hard reboot is the 30 seconds push?

My 50e was delivered with 8.0 and subsequently upgraded to 8.5. 8.5 is not a game changer, so I would just be patient.

Probably the biggest improvement is Driving Assist Plus.

It is 30 seconds. Best to do it while driving so you can see the reboot starting. If you do it while the engine is not running the screen will turn black soon after pushing the button in but the reboot will not start unless you continue holding.
