I was torn and went with Phytonic as I figured I could spend the $2K on other things for the whip. I will say Phytonic, full coffee and piano black is sharp...wait, I have that!

Appreciate all the responses. Both colors look great. I just noticed that the Tanzanite can take up to 10 weeks to receive when ordered.

I think you will find a lot of people's response is what they ordered. I have seen both in person and they are both very nice. It just depends if you want that brighter color of Phytonic or the deeper color of the Tanzanite. The truth is that I don't think you could go wrong with either. They were my top two choices. I wouldn't let the money make you decision. Choose as though they cost the same and just get what you want.

That was not the case this past fall. Note, the online configurator a few days ago was also stating the same for merino leather. I would consult with your client advisor.

Question, What makes the tanzanite more expensive? Better paint, more durable, or just higher pigment cost?

I have a 2020 Tanzanite and I'm guessing because it is more of a metallic look and less flat looking that has more steps in the process. As for production, mine seemed to get built pretty quick once it entered assembly. I definitely didn't wait an additional 10 days. As for durability my SA warned me that Tanzanite is really soft and easy to mark compared to other colors, and my detailer (who is ceramic coating the car and has no affiliation to BMW) also told me that the Tanzanite is really soft compared to other X5 colors.

If you want a BLUE car, go with Phytonic. It always looks blue whether sunny, overcast, clean or dirty. There is no mistaking that you have a BLUE car.

Tanzanite looks absolutely stunning when it is clean and sunny. If it is dirty and the lighting conditions are less than full sun, it can look dull and nearly black. On a daily basis, Tanzanite will be closer to owning a black car than a blue car, in my opinion. It is only slightly lighter than carbon black in full sun.

So do you feel this is true based on your ownership so far?

Having the car for a week and that is it winter its hard to say, but there are some scuffs I can see in the paint that would buff out quite easy. I'm being very careful to not touch the car with anything as it is going in for paint correction and ceramic coating. Also note that if you have your car ceramic coated, they will almost always do a paint correction first, no matter of color. No paint from the factory is perfect.

My SA was happy I has having it ceramic coated to help with the durability. In his words, and please realise he was exaggerating, "if you look at Tanzanite wrong, it makes a mark".

My exact sentiments regarding the two new black vehicles that I have previously owned. Dark colored vehicles are generally a PITA.

Carbon black can appear quite similar, although this is taken with direct sunlight. I love the look of Tanzanite too!

I picked phytonic, because od 2 reasons:
1. Like someone said, Phytonic is always blue. Tanzanite is once blue, once black once...
2. And 2000 eur difference. For this I choosed massaged seats and HUD.

I would choose Tanzanite Blue if it didn't cost $2K. Therefore I went with phytonic and happy with my choice

Leaning Phytonic with Tartufo inside. Other than potentially needing a new username, thoughts on that combo? I might be bored w black on black

I love the Tanzanite color even after a fully year. Some friends of mine picked up a Phytonic X5 the other month - looks great, but I still would go with Tanzanite. The thing that sold me when chose the color was seeing it up close in person. For lack of a better phrasing, it's like a "chameleon" blue in the sense that the color shifts depending on the light; I think even more so than possibly Carbon Black. If it's in the shadows, it looks to be black or almost black. If it's in bright sunlight you'll see a very dark metallic blue. If the sunlight is somewhere in between, more of the purple will come out and you'll see a bluish-violet color. Some people don't like the dark color because it's a pain to keep clean (among other drawbacks with a dark colored car), so that's a consideration. Also, if you're looking for something closer to a traditional blue, then you'd probably prefer Phytonic. Can't go wrong with either color really. Ultimately it's always a personal preference with color.

Color changes quite a bit depending on lighting.
Your photos really show off the Phytonic Blue. I was going to post mine but your photos are way better. We love the color, especially with Ivory Merino interior.

OP, you can't go wrong either way. I think the other blue costs more.
