There are a lot of winning whiskeys that are mediocre at best.

I was JUST at the Buffalo Trace distillery this past Wednesday. Took a tour but really went to grab a bottle of Colonel Taylor! Your allowed 1 bottle @ $43 per every 90 days I think it is. It's $110 bottle in my neck of the woods. I love it, so it was worth the drive! Lol

Mars Iwai Tradition Haru - Sakura Cask Finished (blended) (not falsely labeled as Japanese)
Description: https://www.blackwellswines.com/prod...6&currency=USD

Seems like it's quite similar to this version, as I agree with this review. https://www.thejapanesewhiskyreview....whisky-40%ABv/

Worth a try at $60/$65 with tax, which is what I got it for locally. Wouldn't go out of my way to get it again, though.

It's really not too bad at all. I'm a big Woodford fan though and the Buffalo Trace doesn't hold a candle to that for my taste buds. I wouldn't turn the Buffalo Trace away though. If you haven't had the Colonel Taylor small batch yet it's worth a try if you can get your hands on it. Hands down my favorite bourbon right now. It's pricey AF but worth it for me. I break it out on special occasions and it's always a hit.

Woodford reserve is what I usually reach for on a bourbon night at my house.

I keep seeing peple say its expensive AF about random stuff...curious... what do you guys consider pricey for lets say a special bottle or an every day bottle?

Like I am perfectly ok with paying $120 - $130 bucks for a Yamazaki or Hakushu 12 yr for everyday drinking. I paid $365 for a bottle of Yamazaki 2016 Sherry Cask Edition for a special bottle which I was also ok with seeing as it is one of 5000 made

I've just gotten into bourbon recently. I'm not to the point where I feel as though I can properly appreciate a truly expensive bottle of bourbon. So for me....in terms of strictly bourbon....anything over $100 qualfies as expensive AF. I fully expect that threshold to rise exponentially if I continue to learn how to properly appreciate the stuff. I'm not sure that I could tell the difference between a $5k bottle of Michter's Sour Mash Whiskey Celebration and the $110 bottle of colonel Taylor.

Up to $200 for a special bottle, too many good bourbons for $80 and less for me to go higher for a daily drinker. Proof also makes a difference as 130 proof to 80 proof the 80 has a lot more water in it. The $80 daily is likely a higher proof bottle. Like cars, watches, or whatever luxury item, going from really good to great comes with a high price increase.

Getting roughly 16 drinks out of a bottle, $160 bottles work out to $10 a drink and I don't want to drink $30 worth on a normal night. Also have a hard time spending $15 for a drink at a bar when it is just a pour (nothing I can't do), for a bottle that likely costs $45 and less than $3 a drink at my house.

This is kind of how I feel. I'm no connoisseur, I can't tell if one has leather notes vs mountain musk. Most anything I get in the $40-$50 range tastes good to me. When I venture under that I've encountered stuff I just didn't like. When I've ventured above that range I don't feel my palate can sense enough difference to justify the extra cost.

I just buy different stuff for fun and if I did a taste test one after another I can sense mild differences between them, but not enough that would make one much more or less enjoyable than the other.

So for me $40-$50 is the sweet spot, although I did enjoy BT and that was like $25 I think. I would consider anything above like $60 pricey and anything above $100 expensive AF.

Also add that when I buy the expensive bottle it ends up sitting for too long as I look at it and say to myself I should save it for some special occasion (who knows what this means?), or I look at the bottle that costs half as much and is far easier to find and just drink it.

Example for me is I have a EH Taylor Single barrel (purchased for I think $90) and small batch purchased for around $50. Now I see I can trade the Single Barrel for around $200 and I will likely trade it for (3) $65 bottles, it's good but I don't see it being worth the market price.

Great thread!
Here are some of my bottles for daily sipping. Laphroaig, Talisker and Glenfiddich are camera shy and off to the side. Most of the bottles came from Costco, I just starting getting into Scotch about two years ago.

Woodford Reserve is my #1 choice. I always have a bottle on the bar cart and it's usually stocked by many restaurants I frequent. Uncle Nearest 1856/Uncle Nearest 1884 is my second choice and more of a specialty pour for me. Candidly, it's one of the best whiskeys I've ever had. Its relatively unknown story resonates with me and adds even more character to an already fantastic whiskey. Yamazaki 12 rounds out my small list. My wife brought me back a bottle from the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery in Japan a few years back and I've been hooked ever since.

The Distillers Select is what's ALWAYS on my bar top. The double oaked is indeed good....it's just rarely available in my area.

I have a lot of daily drinkers as I drink whatever I am in the mood for on any particular day. Most of my bottles are probably ~$60 but I have 15-20 that are $120+ that also see regular rotation. I rarely find something under $40 that I find myself reaching for.
