Lower tailgate automatic or manual?

Hi, just picked up a 2020 x5 sports/prem enhanced package.

The lower tailgate button is there and when I press on it, it unhatches but does not go down nor up unless you force it. Read that there could be a problem with the motor (still have warranty) but also read that many have a manual tailgate. When you forcefully push it down, it’s not easy so which tells me there’s a motor.. how do I verify that because even some dealership tell me that it could be manual…?

I think this maybe region dependent. US spec G05 all have both auto top and bottom tail gate, EXCEPT there was a 2 month windows in 2022, lower tail gate becomes manual due to supply chain issue. I got one of those.

the manual tailgate didn’t occur until MY22. you have a MY20 so you should have an electronic tailgate. likely the motor spindle has failed

FYI.. .. Your model year had the spindle drive automatic lower trunk door which is why you have the button. Something must be wrong with it and there have been other reports like your symptom posted here. Like others have said and I seem to recall that the spindle drive is what fails. Go here to see what the spindle drive looks like. . https://www.ebay.com/itm/154926186104

Here is a realoem view in which #6 is the spindle drive.

Thanks for this!

The bmw mechanic was working on it for 3-4 hours today and then they finally told me to come back next time because they need to order “some” part. You’d think they would be able to diagnose it faster than that…

I am sure it will have, my new 50i has it and it was only a few months when the x5 didn't have it.

there’s been no indication of a supply shortage warranting deletion of the electric lower tailgate as was the case a year ago.

if I recall correctly, the deletion prompted a $150 credit for vehicles with a manual lower tailgate and listed as a separate line item in the build features

For awhile the automatic tailgate was an option for the G05 in the UK and manual tailgate was standard. I think they changed that however a few years ago but you will want to verify with your dealer.

Automatic tailgate is standard in UK and has been for a long time.

At least through 2020 it was not standard as the Comfort pack had to be ordered to get it.

Just checked and comfort access is standard on all UK models including the base x line diesel.

I have the same issue on my 2020. Not a big deal so havent taken it in yet but I assume there is an issue with the motor.

And this is why I would have preferred good old fashioned manual.

Modern cars have some much electric/mechanical complications and they are often for foolish "upgrades".
