Do I miss much buying in at Year 1?

Everyone has heard about the not buying the first year of a new model due to the manufacturing working out the gremlins, but aside from that, is it often the case that one year down the road (or maybe even less than that) BMW will introduce new options or standard equipment? I read about the M differential in the new X3 that early adopters missed out on, but is that typical or atypical?

Atypical but becoming more typical it appears, this was reported last week which will make me pause.

G05 X5 xDrive45e iPerformance (same 390hp powertrain that will be seen first in 745e LCI) will be available in 2019 for MY2020.

Both G05 X5 and G07 X7 xDrive50i will replace their launch version of N63 (456hp) with the same new 530hp engine and become X5/X7 M50i. Here's finally your explanation why they were sticking with "xDrive50i": "M50i" was reserved for the more powerful engine.

I've read something similar about the M40i for 2020, which is just after the second year of introduction. Why are they making such drastic changes so quickly?! If it was part of the LCI, I get that, but why bump hp up so much so quickly? It's not like they are down compared to competition.

On the M2 it was about emissions and maybe the V8..?

My guess, they needed a unique engine for the launch of the M850i, and its not very effective to make 2,000 engines a year so its more cost effective to expand that motor across the range after the first year of the 8 series. I don't think you'll see technology changing after year one. I do see MSRP prices rising in the V8 bracket. The i6's are becoming so powerful that you'll have to really want a V8 to purchase it, thus I think they will charge for the honor.

The M40i will only get a modest bump. I'm more pissed about missing out on the M Steering Wheel and differential. After our experience with being the first to get the M40i, I think I would wait...but easier said then done!

I noticed that you can buy a BMW Power Kit (software update?) on a 540i which bumps up the stock 335hp to exactly the same 355/369 as the M40i. Perhaps this 2020 M40i bump will be similar in that BMW will release a Power Kit to bump the 2018-2019 M40i's to the 2020 spec level.

I always stay away from year 1 and even year 2 on any new body style. My wife likes the new Tiguan, but finding out it’s plagued with problems.

The first year of the F15 was pretty reliable and I was shocked. But I think it gets little deeper now than just a car being a new model. It’s more about how much and what has changed. Red flags are a brand new engine, new electronics, and new features. With so much being shared within BMW it seems that has helped quality. The engines are shares (yes the 8 never has been perfect), iDrive keeps getting changed but is similar in all models. Usually many of the core parts are shared. So I expect the G05 to have some issues but to be better than we may expect. Concerns for me are the new digital dash (VW experienced this since they did not use the Audi part and the new one has been a mess). Of course save this message and tell me how wrong I was

I do plan on buying a 2019 so wish me luck.

very typical first year buyers will miss out on:

1. updated nav (new nav typically launch with flagship cars like the 7 series, F15s launched with NBT, but later models received NBT Evo)
2. LCI facelift (F15 did not receive LCI, but E70 did and the appearance was significant)
3. newer motor choices (F15 only added 40e, though E70 went through an enter turbo motor refresh as part of LCI)

you're correct, the F15 was not dramatically different than the E70 and other models at the time.

Motors were all updated and carry overs
Navigation was a carry over
Mechanicals were mostly carry overs (I know for a fact the E70 and F15 primary braking components were the same, along with suspension)

This may be BMW's new MO, is to launch a global car with more part commonality with the rest of the range and not change anything to it for the entire life cycle.

This concept has been carried out starting in 2013 launches of the next gen "F" cars. The 5 and 6 series, X5, 3 series stayed the same for the substantial parts (motor, transmission) Heck, I'm going to say, most F cars only got a mild LCI facelift, not like what we saw with the E cars

G05 has added neat but ready to break down new complexity. Just look at added electric motors for new moving tonneau cover and power tailgate bottom door. Doubt these will last without issues.

I have to agree. Specifically, the motorized tonneau cover. Because that spans the width of the car, all it takes is the smallest tweak of those rails/tracks/frame molding, and that bar is going to jam during movement.

I don't want to be bringing my BMW into the shop because the motorized tonneau cover jammed again.
