BMW Individual & Lane Change Assist https://g07.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1799732 TLDR; BMW Manufaktur Individual 490 paints catalog (colors have been available for many years) have not been optimized for current radar compatibility - this includes paint certification and thickness. And copy-paste from another thread: Below is my translation for LCA deactivation when ordering 490 paints: "Please note that with 490 BMW Individual paint the function "Lane change assistant" which is a part of option 5AU "Driving assistant professional" has to be deactivated. This happens by adding option 8TR "decoding additional function" from: https://www.g20-forum.de/forum/threa...k-lane-assist/ The problem with the new radar sensors is that the different paints reflect or scatter the radar waves differently. In the development phase, every BMW standard production paint is tested and optimized for radar compatibility, but the majority of BMW Individual Manufaktur 490 paints (developed pre-LCA) have not been tested. It may well be that the sensors works without any problems - or there may be many false or non-detections. Ensuring the radar compatibility of the current catalog of 490 paints is time-consuming, complex and costly according to factory sources and the fact that there aren't significant numbers of 490 paint orders for BMW to justify. Additional notes regard 490 paint thickness: "The individual paints are thicker BUT the layer thickness depends on the particular paint, not whether it is individual or series. Mineral white has, for example, always been thicker because the homogeneity is worse with a thin coat of paint than with other paints (otherwise it looks cloudy)."

The most cited reason is that the painting process has not been tested/certified to be used with the system. Others have said that the individual paint is a little thicker and it can interfere with the sensors. That is definitely a concern with some, Audi even put a service bulletin out to dealers stating that any repainting needs to be measured so it is only a certain thickness over the sensors. I would guess either could be the case.
While I was ordering my M340i, BMWNA sent a statement that my dealer and I had to acknowledge stating that the lane change assistant will be coded out and not available. I have not checked or heard if they are doing the same for the X5 or not. At one point the warning was not on the individualizer and then it showed up. Someone said the sensors on the X5 are bigger so it can go through thicker paint. Do not know if that is valid or not. Edit: I should have went to the next page and read Auricom's reply, excellent info as usual.
