Chris, before they can do anything with the new batteries they have to "condition" the battery. The battery conditioner apparently is a fancy charger that also programs the battery. The issue at most dealership is the code levels and they have to send it off to the manufacturer for updates. With all service centers needing it, it is taking awhile.

i didn't receive anything in the mail (yet), but I recently noticed a red recall notification when I accessed My Garage on the online site which took me the to recall site and confirmed I have an open recall against my VIN. although the notes state the recall affects vehicles produced Feb-Sep 2020, I spoke with customer relations who stated the recall period was recently extended to include vehicles produced through Jan 2021. Earlier posts here state VINs starting with 5UX are among the affected.

A year ago I cancelled my 45e order because there were some fires in the EU and it wasn't clear what the cause was and when I asked BMWNA about it they were pretty cryptic. I kinda regret it now, but back then I didn't want the hassle should it prove to be something more major ... |

My 45e is recalled as well
I was contacted via phone and email from BMW corporate (and a notice in My Garage) and seems my car is recalled as well. I asked about this when I bought my car in April, and was told my car was not part of this recall issued Sept 2020.
Anyway - they said the "parts" will be available in Nov and I'll get a notice on my dash screen to contact a local BMW. Does anyone know if all the cars get the battery pack replaced, or is this just a "check" or battery condition (or possibly both)? They do send you $1000 for the trouble - I didn't believe it at first, but got the money! cheers |

one scenario i remember reading from when the recall went into effect in 2020 was that the dealership first received the equipment to diagnose the vehicle's battery modules. then it took several more weeks to get the equipment that actually changed the defective battery modules. |

If you remember - my car was the one where the SW update in June crashed my vehicle and the key fobs didn't work. This is not good. I just sold my house, and moving to another state and living in a hotel and getting ready to travel for 30 days. Maybe I can just drop it off at a dealer and they'll get it done. Plus, I de-chromed it, and powder coated the wheels. I'd hate to give it up. cheers edit: I went out to look at all the paperwork, and there is a battery log which the first examination is 3/31/21 at the dealership from where I purchased it. I'm wondering if that means they have the equip to diagnose it. I will stop by tomorrow. They may remember my vehicle (which stumped them in June for 10 days) Last edited by leightos; 11-02-2021 at 12:34 AM.. |

Most dealerships are selling their stock before it actually arrives, but if one has some old stock, maybe a combination of options that was hard to sell for them, they might trade a vehicle with another dealer...so, that might be why you had one that was sitting somewhere for awhile.

When BMW has a stop order, the dealers aren't allowed to release a vehicle. Depending on where it was when that happened, yes, it could have been sitting for awhile elsewhere along the delivery chain.

nZtiZia , I saw in another thread that you had the recall repair performed for your battery. I am just wondering what the repair involved? Did they test the battery first and found that some modules needed to be replaced?

The HV battery system in the X5 consists of four boxes, with multiple modules in each one, unlike say a Tesla, where thousands of small cells are bonded together into a massive battery pack...those that BMW uses are pouches, and much larger. While BMW does not replace an individual cell, but they do replace individual modules. If you haven't looked, there's a sticky at the top of this forum with documents you can download to become more familiar with the inner workings of the vehicle if you wish.

Yes, maintenance on a BMW HV battery is by module, not cell, or the whole pack (like on Tesla). Each module has, I think, 16 cells in it...at least at the dealership, they do not replace individual cells, only modules.

my SA emailed me on 11/16 they had everything to diagnose; he emailed again 2 days later that they ordered the components, so i would think the diagnostic took place in a day. Last edited by nZtiZia; 11-30-2021 at 06:07 PM.. |
