Thats what the technician said when i took the car back to the dealership.
They say its just normal operation, which means there is currently no ways to fix it for the dealerships.
Or in other words, this is a design flaw.

I'm not. It's not the sound of a fan, it's the sound of electronic components ringing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringing_(signal)
It's a design flaw, albeit likely not a terminal one so there's no rush to address it. You can also hear the same sound under the hood in front of the driver where one of the main control modules is. This ringing is coupling on the lines/bus of the car.

So I took the car to service and no one could hear it and this is driving me nuts. I almost want to go trade the car in and get like a GLE 53 amg coupe.

Like I said earlier, I recently had a '21 loaner and it was worse. I can *just* tolerate our '19 but I, sadly, wouldn't be able to replace it with a '21 X5 due to this issue. It would drive me insane.

Im going to the dealer tomorrow and asking to switch it out. If not, im taking it to MB or RR and seriously considering trading it in with 300 miles on the odo.

I got around 8% off, so the trade-in should be decent. I may not lose anything if MB or RR want to do business?

My BMW dealer on has 2 X6's on their lot, so we shall see. I refuse to drive a 80,000 luxury SUV that literally makes my brain hurt. Im even willing to buy a more expensive M50i if it doesn't have the damn sound. I love how this car looks, drives, tech but none of that is worth my sanity.

https://streamable.com/2mkpgb

I took a video of it today and its maddening. This is what I hear the entire time I drive. And the service people all could not hear it. I don't understand how...

Turn your sound up or use headphones. Its very evident, during the entire video. If you don't hear anything still, its possible you have some hearing loss for high frequencies.

I can hear it. It would annoy me too. Sounds like a high-pitched “beeeeeeeeep.”

It’s electronic obviously, but what is it? Almost sounds like a microphone/speaker feedback loop sound, just very faint.

No idea, but I hear it all the time. Even with the radio on higher volumes. The frequency pierces through all sounds since its not on the same wavelength.

OMG, I hear it in the audio clip. Definitely share this with the dealership people. BMW got to fix this crap sound! I wonder if the speaker magnet right above or the head unit is contributing to this!

Service wont fix it because they can't hear it. I need this car exchanged ASAP for one thats not defective. This is unacceptable in an $80,000 vehicle, really.

You should first try a different BMW dealership. Multiple people in my service dept. heard and acknowledged the noise, they just said they couldn't do anything about it (that was about a year ago). At the time they even engaged BMW engineering. I know I'm not the only one complaining about the noise (hence your thread and others). It is possible they are developing a solution in Germany. It's worth pursuing at another dealership to find that out.

Even after you play the recording on your phone? All of them are deaf or what?

Publish the audio clip on YouTube, share the link here, and open a case with BMWNA. Tell them the sound is distracting, you could potentially loose concentration while driving, and consequence could be fatal. Twitter and NHTSA will be next two options. Dealership might not care, but BMW PR people do. This thread and audio clip is your proof.

I emailed the owner/partner of the dealership last night and I got a call from service director this morning after they heard this exact video.

They said they want to replace my entire HVAC control unit to see if the problem goes away.

I'm willing to try this out. However if not, I firmly yet politely asked the owner to swap me the car out or just refund me because I cannot drive something that makes this noise every day. Its not worth my sanity. Im even willing to buy a more expensive M50i if the noise isn't there lol. If it is, time to take a look at Porsche Cayenne coupe and MB GLE coupe 53 AMG again. I felt the X6 40i M sport was a better package than both of those, but not with this noise lol.

Out of curiosity, do you guys who have the sound problem have the heated seats+wheel+armrest package?

I noticed there are 4 different HVAC control units based on what seat option you have 1. Heated seats. 2. Heated and ventilated seats. 3 Comfort package. 4. Heated seats and armrests. Mine is the 4th. Perhaps the its a bad batch of those units?

You mean a *worse* batch of those units; they all do it to some degree. Unfortunately, I've yet to find a X5 that is completely free of this noise.

Ours is 4. heated seats and armrests.

No, I think all the hvac control units are just dog shit components and there's nothing bmw can do about it until they change their supplier which they probably have a massive agreement for that they can't break.

If mine doesn't get fixed within 3 repairs, im going to lemon there car here in NY if the dealer wont take it back and refund me. Ill even buy a car from their Mercedes or Audi dealers since its the same owner for all 3 here. But I will not drive this car if it keeps making this noise. I refuse to pay for something this annoying.

The worst part is, I can hear the stupid noise for a long time even after I exit the car. It like resonates in my head for an hour after.

This can seriously be a torture method for people who sensitive ears.

I had a similar whine on my F15 but it was only noticeable between 30 and 55 mph. A friend had the same issue in his and it took his dealer 2 weeks to solve it with a new head unit. I gave details to my dealer and they fixed it in 24 hours with BMW UK recognising it was the same fault and authorising a new head unit.

As someone else said take it to another dealer...

Im pretty sure its just cause some people are unable to hear those frequencies. I have very good hearing and can hear these stupid high frequencies and thats why it bothers me.

I bet if I sit in another member's car here who says they don't have the problem I will be able to hear it.

Its probably BMW didn't even think of since the engineers could not hear it.

Luckily, it seems our cell phones can capture the sound and processes it such a manner that its easily audible to anyone.

The moment I emailed the sound bite to my dealer's manager, they had the service director call me the next day and say they are bringing in a BMW engineer or something like that to come fix it. They acknowledged how annoying it could be.

If the sound is still there, I will be asking them to buy the car back from me and either replace with another X6 or just buy a different brand if all X6's have this sound- defect with the entire line up.

When you say head unit, do you mean the entire HVAC control unit or the actual head unit which controls the iDrive located way under the center console?

That thing is deep in there based on the schematics I've seen.
