40i - Fuel consumption
Question to 40i users about real fuel consumption - I am interested in:
- city, - motorway and constant speed, - route outside the city. |

I'm getting 17.8 MPG on my 40i for driving around town, but this area is fairly rural. Also, I'm not pushing the engine as I'm still in the break-in period.

Sounds about right. That's about what I am expecting for city driving.
Hoping for about 25 on the highway. I get about the same on my SQ5, which is a 6CY turbo as well. |

If it's anything like the current X5 35i (I6) mileage is subjective. I have one as a loaner right now and get 20mph highway (speed limit here is 75mph) . City mpg is around 12-15 with a light foot. I hope the new one is better. My X3 M40i manages 27-40hwy and 17-20 city with a heavier foot. I'm not sure how the G05 does but I can't see it being that much better than before.

I consistently got 16 in the city on my F15 with a heavy foot. XDrive 35i.
My G05 XDrive 40i is being driven quite gingerly this week while I get used to the technology (both good and bad) and I’m averaging 10.6. I seriously hope that’s not true for the long term |

FWIW, just completed a 300 mile drive and averaged 27 MPG, mostly interstate and main roads using the cruise control. So you can get surprisingly high MPG on long hauls.
I'm sure the slickness of my ceramic coating helped by 1-2 MPG's |

Just completed about 300 miles the other day in our 40i. Reset the trip and averages before departure. With a Thule on top (drag) doing 85 most of the time, showing 61mph average speed, we got 21.3mpg.

I was getting 11 on my 40i mostly city driving.
I was told by the dealer to try and use regular gas instead of premium and now I’m getting 13.5 mostly city. Still terrble mileage. My f15 got much better. |

Don't even ask what I'm getting in the 50i. Then again, I'm getting so many smiles per gallon it doesn't matter.

It's probably too early to call this. Most people here will barely be out of break-in. Mileage will improve. If you're like me, I sit in my X5 idling, messing with controls and settings for (what seems like) hours on end. I don't even want to look at mpg right now ;-)

Still, some interesting numbers. Some are extremely low, which if kept occuring would prevent us from buying the X5, others are more in line in what I would expect, especially for highway driving.
X5 would be my wife's daily driver, so still want mpg to be decent. Diesel would have been perfect... |

That is intersting, as I always thought premium gas made mpg go up by about 10%? That would be good if you could use regular gas. I am suprised the new X5 is not getting better than F15. It seems like with each generation, the mpg gets better.
My G30 gets much better mpg than my old 5 Series, but then again that is a sedan. |

No matter what, in my normal route I usually show 24-25 mpg on all of my BMWs computers, even in ones I've had that have had a gas guzzler tax on
I was surprised by getting 26 in the G05 4.0 on the same routine 36 mile trip which is combined highway with 17 red lights (they're ALWAYS Red for me), stop and go, and last in town. I was so happy and surprised that I snapped a photo the other day to show my husband.
