Cabin air filter. Here is how you change it. (DIY) Also access to internal fuse box.
G05 X5 Cabin air filter access:
I took some time around our ventilation system to see where the cabin air filters were and how to change them. First, the new G05 does not have a exterior pollen filter in front of the windshield under the hood. What we have is two charcoal panel filters located under the front passenger foot well. This is where the blower motor is located, cabin air filter box, and the fuse box. To access these items you must remove the plastic panel in the front passengers foot well. It is located around the lower airbag unit. The panel has the foot well light attached to it. There are two thumbs screws that you turn 90°. Pull the panel slightly down in the front and pull it toward you as the rear has guide hooks it will release from. Unhook the plug to the footwell light and pull off the wire ring plug holding it to the panel. Now the panel is free and remove it from the car. Before doing this lay at towel down across your door sills to avoid scratching the aluminum. You are going to be half laying inside and out on top of them This is the back of the footwell panel. Note the heavy sound insulation BMW uses in the G05. You can now see the fuse box, fan blower motor and cabin filter housing. Unscrew the two torx bolts from the panel lid. Once removed, pull the white rubber drain tube off the panel lid. At this point the two panel filters probably fell from their housing. Note the direction they came out as the filters are airflow specific. Inspect and clean or just replace the two panel filters. You can use a soft brush and vacuum the pleats if they are not too dirty. Mine were really clean after 2500 miles. I gave them a quick vacuuming and sprayed both sides with lysol to kill any germs or odors. Reverse the process to reinstall. Remember to reconnect the white rubber drain tube. It’s pretty ease to replace the cabin air filters and I see this being done more often since we don’t have a pollen filter under the hood. Last edited by MystroX5; 10-19-2019 at 10:29 AM.. |

Thanks for taking the time to take the pix and post the procedure! You mentioned the white water drain tube? Where is it taking the water from and where is it draining it to? Can you tell? |

If you look behind the battery under the hood on the passenger side below the windshield, you will see the air intake for the ventilation. Turn on the fan and you can hear where it draws air into the cabin. This is where I thought a pollen filter would be but there isn’t one. Last edited by MystroX5; 10-19-2019 at 10:54 AM.. |

I felt all around the white tube when it was off and the lid was never damp. The rubber tube was also perfectly dry. It could be just a safeguard. |

I've done this procedure on my 2019 X5. Be careful to place the two pairs of tabs correctly on the rear of the filter cover lid. They are easy to break (ask me how I know). A replacement lid is $28 with BMWCCA discount (ask me how I know).

FYI. The white on the lid is a rubber gasket for those that want to know. BMW is very serious with keeping then filter lid air tight. |

Oh yea, floor liners would make it brutal. Surprised you didn’t take them out to do this job. It is tight in that foot well.

Hey Lumpydog Do you remember how did to put filters back in ,I mean the AIR Flow , I took mine out,,and forgot to take a photo. There is no AIR Flow indicator on the housing at all, it looks like BMW doesn't want us to change this simple and important part ourselves. Thanks |

What is the current BMWCCA discount for parts? I don't see it listed on their website. I am interested in a few OEM accessories. I thought it was around 10-15%. Strange they don't list it. Thanks. |

When they moved the filters from the engine bay to under the glove box, its tougher to replace filters. My F30 filters are in the same location. The first time I change that filter it took an hour of frustration. Then, I watched a video. Now I think I can change that filter in 5 minutes. Armed with good info like you posted, there is no reason to pay to have this done. |

I’m not Lumpydog...but I do know the BMW CCA (car club of America) discount varies by dealerships. Each BMW dealership can set their own discount amount...some dealerships may not even give a discount. This is why a specific amount is not listed on their website. You’ll need to ask the dealership you’re purchasing items from what their BMW CCA discount amount is.

You are right. I have replace these in both locations and much prefer doing it under the hood. I highly recommend laying down a few large bath towels over your door sills as it’s hard on your back and if you are over 6’, it’s very tight in the footwell. . Once you know what to do, this is really a 15 minute job the next time you do it. |

Exactly. I used a couple of thick throw rugs. That did the trick. Otherwise its painful.
