Tell her to be happy with your big dick, it's a lot more rare than a $50K diamond.

I spent $13k (significantly less than 3 months salary) on my wife's ring and she thinks I'm crazy for having spent that much.
It shouldn't matter if you spend $100k or $5. A ring is merely symbolic and the significance, rather than the value is what should matter. I'd run.

The ring I bought my wife was $1000 dollars on a poor mans budget, and that was the engagement ring. She loved it. My wife is low maintenance and I love her for that, Not to say she doesn't like nice or expensive things but it's love before any material thing in our life. I recently upgraded the ring though, Not even over 5 grand because "I" wanted to. She was perfectly fine with the first one.

I have a related story, slightly OT but i guess you guys will like it.
I was in Toronto for only a few months before i planned to propose and there was a big arse sign near my office that read "DIAMONDS". So i say to the then girlfriend that i am heading out and i head to said store. It's kinda quiet but open so I open the door and go in, cue strippers everywhere!! Seriously got my wires crossed but it would not have been a good look. |

If we had kept everything separate I could retire much younger than she would be able to, not sure how this would work or if it is really fair for two people supposedly together for life. I guess I could tell her tough luck for going into the field she went into. LOL. Without the really well done prenup (then still not sure) I would wonder what happens if your business goes from being really small to really big while you are married. Example, when married total value of business was $50k, 15 years later it is worth $10 million. I don't think just keeping finances separate works everywhere.

Wanting you to spend that much money on a worthless rock is a huge red flag. She's going to drain you once married if she really cares about her wedding ring. |

3 Months Pay, 3 Months Pay, You bought her a ring, it cost you 3 months Pay. I'm not much of a lyricist so can one of my BP-OT friends help me out, here and finish this? |

Wasn't around for the first part of the thread either. Sorry you got divorced.
Ive been engaged three times, bought rings three times but luckily, never went through with the marriage the first two times. There were warning signs and i luckily listened the first couple times. Married the third one, happy i did. Speaking of the rings, each lady insisted their ring was better than the last lady. So i spent $12k, then $15k, then $22k. Even the $22k ring is less than 1 month salary but as a CPA i don't blow money frivolously. For those thinking of buying a ring. Buy a nice ring that she will be proud of but don't be stupid with spending tons of money if you cant afford it. Financial problems are the number 1 reason for divorce. Be smart with money! If she wants a ring better than her friends ring even if she knows you cant really afford it, then she is not the right girl for you! |

The value of the ring seems to have many on this thread thinking she will take the ring if you divorce. If her family is wealthy and she makes more than you then you are marrying up and a divorce would have you coming out ahead. Though it is concerning that she cares about the value of the ring but maybe she just wants to keep up with her friends. If your relationship is genuine it should not be about money. And that will shine brighter than any ring. Is her family paying for the wedding and are you paying for the honeymoon? The idea is not to be broke so your families will pick up much of the tab. I'm assuming you can afford the lifestyle she wants.
