But from my previous experience (and previous posts) it is only those higher trims of interior that have this noise...so if your test driver car does not have those packages/options, it will be very quiet, which is what an X5 should be LOL |

At this point we already know it is the vent unit (containing the small screen and buttons, the entire hexagon shaped section, its one single part). But the thing is the parts produced by previous manufacturer all has the noise...waiting for parts from new manufacturer....

Yep, solid advice is to wait until the fall/winter to make sure you get a new one made by a different company just to be sure you don't get some overstock of the old units.

I don't hear anything. I suspect that this is an issue for the younger population who haven't lost their hearing in that frequency range yet. As you get older you lose hearing in the higher frequency ranges.

My old Acura has this. It's almost certainly a computer part issue (resistor whine on a power supply or similar). I recorded the sound with a wave-form analyzer, and took it to the dealer a few times. They basically told be to pound sand (in a nice way).
My BMW doesn't have it yet, at least as far as I can tell, which is good. Note that if it's a computer/power related part, it can develop over time, so no guarantee that it won't appear in the future. Here's hoping, though.
