Help!! Hum between 60-70mph
Hi everyone,
So over the past many months I have noticed a fairly loud bass-like hum when I hit 60mph. Drop down to 59-58...goes away completely. Similarly when I hit 70-71+ also almost completely disappears. Thought it was a tires, as I have 30,000 miles and the OEMs needed replacement. I figured the worn tires were just hitting a reverberating frequency at those speeds. But I just had the tires replaced yesterday at the dealer- Pirelli Scorpion verde plus II- known for being quiet. Noise is still there. It is actually loud enough that after a 45 minute drive at 65mph my ears ring when I get home. It's also not the drive train or engine- while at speed I manually put it into different gears and the engine noise is distinctly different than the hum I hear. Does anyone have any ideas? Dealer drove it and said the typical dealer thing...."can't hear it." |

Means you need to just drive faster!!
Kidding, my wife recently had her tires swapped on the X3 and a hum was still there lower speeds but ended up being rear tire out of alignment. They also rebalanced the tires, hum is all gone.

Thanks...Good tip. they asked about an alignment but I said no...I didn't think it needed it. but my rear brakes need replacing so I have to take it back to them. Maybe I'll have them do an alignment

Wheel size? I know some G05 wheel sizes, bmw is supposed to install a bolt on weight on one of the suspension components to address resonance frequency issues. I've read here before some cars were missing this. Have them check for this.
Search this forum for other posts related to that issue.

That tuff one, that sounds a little more steady than hers. Mind you the X3 is louder inside but it had a bit more popping... I don't have it recorded and hard to describe

No, tire pressure doesn't seem to help. My old tires were a bit high at 36F/45r and the new ones they put on are 32 front and 40 rear. Same noise. I'll try to record what It sound like. I called the service department and he said they would need to look at it again and said maybe a wheel bearing?
Victor, my noise is a bit lower and from the video yours seems to come and go every few seconds. Is that what it is doing? Mine is literally like a bass has been turned up, like you are standing next to a subwoofer. I recall it started (or I noticed it) all of a sudden months ago without any service or anything being done around that time. And I've just checked my car- dampeners are in place in the front Last edited by viperdoc; 01-08-2021 at 11:43 AM.. |

Actually it is constant but like different frequrncies. Interesting thing is the sound behaves like you mentioned, if i drive +-1MPH of 60 or 90 it almost comletely goes away. For me it seems like that the tire or rim is resonating, and the resonance can get to the cabin through the suspension. If in standstill i hit my tyre with the plastic grip of a screwdriver i get the same hum like noise. I have attached another video, maybe it represents better. No solution as of now...

I have only 3000 miles in the car, can not give it back because it is leased. I had the problem from day1 with 22 inch summer wheels, and now also with 20 inch winter. With the summer tyres it is even more noticeable especially at 60 and 90 MPH but also present at a wider range but not that loud. With the winter tyres it is only disturbing at those certain speeds. (60 and 90) I have done suspension alignment, now i will rebalance the tyres next week. Same experience i have tried a MY 2019 car with 20 inch wheels before buying mine, it was dead silent...

Still at the dealer. They’ve had it since yesterday. They didn’t have a loaner so my wife and I are down to one car. I need it back tomorrow afternoon as I work an hour away Saturday. I’ll let you know tomorrow but hopefully they found something.

Well, no luck with dealer #1. Said they couldn’t hear anything abnormal. Had my wife drive it...she says...”that noise is giving me a headache!” So I have a service appointment with a different dealer next week. I also downloaded a decibel meter Onto my phone. From 58mph to 63 mph there’s a 5dB increase, particularly at the lower frequencies. No way is that Is normal. This dealer here sucks anyway.

Hi,
Thank You for Your update. Is it possible to make a video from yours, i could compare it with mine... I hope the second dealer will find something. For me it is the same, also dB increase at 60 mph and 90 mph. Quote:

I actually just took a video with my phone. When I play it back through the car speakers you can hear it clearly but on the phone or computer the bass frequencies aren’t reproduced. My wife verified the vibration I was feeling that goes along with the hum. Are you feeling anything?

This is my half hearted attempt at trying to measure the sound differences by speed. Downloaded a decibel meter onto my phone and it gives the distribution of the relative frequency volumes. Pic 1
Is at 57mph. Pic 2 is at 64mph when the sound really gets prominent. Pic 3 is at 75mph. You can see the rise in pic 2 of the low frequencies. And it makes no sense that 75mph would be quieter than 64mph. I told hold much faith is the absolute decibel levels, since in the 50s is pretty quiet but the changes show what’s going on. With the vibration it’s obviously rotational and it’s not the engine. The sound continues If I kick it into neutral while on the highway. |
