Sorry to necropost but was searching and this was the closest thread I could find.

Looks like we get 2 ‘normal’ key fobs per X5 in the states. Curious but not worried about the key card. My question : Is there any difference in the visual design of the two key fobs to be able to tell them apart?

Our Audis have one with a logo and shiny back and the other no logo and matte black so it’s easy to see which fob goes with which driver/personal settings.

I’ve seen people mention putting stickers or nail polish on one of the fobs, just wondering if there is an easy way to tell them apart without having to do arts and crafts.

Thanks!

the two fobs that came with my 45e are identical. i purchased a case to differentiate. this is pretty much akin to the old days of turn-keys, which were also identical and one would have to purchase a colored rubber ring to go around the bow or cut a new key that looked different.

Great info - thanks for clarifying! Not a big deal, just curious. Trying to find things to keep me occupied while I wait for my order to come in

To be a bit more precise, electronic FOBs that have user-specific customization functionality attached to them are not the same as identical mechanical keys — differentiation is quite a bit more important for fobs. But yes, they are nevertheless supplied identical and yes, there are lots of covers around that can both protect and differentiate; covers can also help with accidental button presses in pockets.

I still use Key Chains! My BMW dealer provides one in a gift bag along with other swag on delivery.

I think those fobs on a keychain are actually called mini nunchucks :-).

My wife and I differentiated ours by putting different house keys on our fobs. They're both of our local NFL football team, she has the orange version, I have the blue version.

You’d think they’d design the FOB or the BMW keychain to actually fit, wouldn’t you?

(The space on the top of the FOB for the keychain is “just” to small for the ring to freely rotate!)

The display key (or any BMW fob) is fairly expensive. The display key also, probably because of the display, needs to be recharged on a regular basis, so that can be a pain if you forget. If enabled in the vehicle, it does provide some features the standard fob doesn't. There used to be a limit on the number of fobs the onboard computer could recognize. That may be part of the reason why they don't offer it in addition to the 'standard' option in the USA.

between mine and my wife's bimmer, we have 4 identical M Sport key fobs. i use this case to differentiate the ones for my car. it's faux carbon fiber so it doesn't kill the signal range whatsoever, and it's the only case i've seen that doesn't fully enclose around it and allows removal of the internal key without having to remove the case.

Any chance of posting a link to the company or purchase site?

Amazon has a ton of options for key fob covers. That's what we do too. I use a chrome (plastic) one b/c the shininess makes it easier for me to find. My wife uses a rubberized carbon fiber looking one cuz it looks cooler.
