Water leaking over driver's seat by the microphone?

Anyone have water leak from around the microphone area on the driver's side? First time it's ever happened. Headliner is wet. Only light rain today and for less than an hour. Been in heavy downpours and never happened. Bummed... dreading taking it to dealer for this. I took some pics and a video.

I think there was another thread on a similar leak. Don't dread taking it to them, that is what the warranty is for and they should be able to fix it and you will forget all about it and get to enjoy your X5.

Thanks TurtleBoy I wish I could find the thread about the leak. (The dread is because of past experiences with other cars with things not being put back together right)

I understand but hopefully they put everything back like it was, except for the leak of course.

It may not be the same as yours but here is the thread. https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1786031

This has happened to me once, after I visited a car wash and accidentally left the sunroof open (on tilt only).

Only a little water got in, but it did start dripping inside from the microphone exactly like your pic.
The dripping lasted only 5-10 mins, after which everything dried up. No problems or permanent damage, and the mic and sunroof functions normally.

Same thing happened to me on my 2020 M50i. It was a plugged drain hole as another poster suggested.

Could be a bad sunroof drain like mentioned above.

Could also be missing adhesive/sealant around the windshield. Had that on a previous car and the only way they could diagnose was by using a stethoscope around the interior of the windshield while driving and listening for wind noise.

Water shower/hose wasn’t the right direction or enough pressure to validate the issue so no water came in during those tests so dealer was lost on the cause.

Most likely a drain issue like mentioned above but something to consider if not. Pretty easy to fix, just like installing a new windshield and you could see if the sealant/adhesive is missing anywhere.

Good luck!

Happened to me.

Brought it in and they stripped it down to the carpets. Everything out. Just the dash remained. Needed new seals around the sky lounge roof and then they had to check everything was properly dry to prevent mould and to check the electronics. The replaced all the roof electronics like the microphones and all the switches. They did a huge amount of work and nothing rattles when they built it back up. Worth it I'd say.

So what happened after they discovered the clogged drain? Mine just did this the other day for the first time and it was only drizzling for a short time. It's been in heavy rain before w/no problems. My car is rarely out in the elements. This is upsetting, and kind of embarrassing, after paying almost 100K for the car. Who knows what else will be affected up inside that headliner?

Seems unusual for a car with less than 2000 miles on it, no matter the price tag. It's garage kept. Regardless, no car should leak water. (Last car I had that leaked water was the '68 Chevy Impala POS I learned to drive in, lol.)

Update on M50i water leak - cracked cassette :-(

The dealer examined my X5's pano moonroof and determined the cassette has a crack in it. They have to replace the entire thing. What happened to quality control at BMW? So...the part had to be ordered from Germany I guess. They were going to try Spartanburg but no luck.

Seems like they wait for a production number on the part first. It's expected to arrive end of February (slow boat from Germany, I assume). I've got a little 3 series loaner since they were out of SUV loaners. (Not great since we are in the middle of moving)

I'm bummed and I hope they don't screw anything else up. It's a new dealer...

Anyone else have this experience?

Had the headliners replaced in both X5s. Everything out - electronics, mics, speakers (B&W), motors, panels. Everything. One thread here shows disassembled - pretty scary. Dealer reinstalled and now just like factory. I wouldn't worry until/unless you have a problem. Good luck on parts - we waited just under a year.

Ok, I've not dealt with them, hope your experience is a positive one but from a warranty point of view, you can take it to any BMW dealer if you're not happy with a particular one. However, once a dealer works on your car and you're not happy with their results, you will find other dealers will not want to fix issues caused by another dealer. I've been through that ordeal

Update on M50i water leak - cracked cassette :-(

My car was at the dealer 43 days before it got fixed. They had to order the part from Germany as there were none available in the states. Part came in on the slow boat from Germany. I wish I didn't leave it at the dealer because they didnt have room to keep it inside 24/7 as their new BMW facility isn't finished (it's a Mini dealer, now BMW). They had to move it in and out of the service bay. So I get it home and my husband finds a chip in the paint on the rear driver's side door. So p!$$ed... it was perfect when I brought it there. They had their paint repair guy touch it up. I'll have to take it to our PPF place see if they can further correct it. I still don't know if the leak is fixed as it hasn't been in the rain or washed (with water). They bent over backwards to satisfy us, and everyone is super nice, but I won't take it there again.

It happened second time - leaking in my BMW X5 G05 with the Panoramic Roof via the microphone. I have visited a jet wash. First time (after heavy rain) during warranty repair I been told the water hose outlet has been twisted. I will be reporting it to the dealer again. Quite bad experience for a £70k vehicle.

Every dealer is going to be different. But that was a poor way of handling it. Right now the parts shortage is affecting everything including repairs. My dealer for my other car informed it will take weeks to get a part and they'd keep tracking it and tell me when it was close. Took about 4 weeks, and I didn't need to bring the car in until they had the part.

Had the same issue come up today but from the passenger side microphone. Dealer said it was probably a clogged drain hole. More to follow.

For those who have this happen, do you frequently open and close the sun(moon) roof?
