Tailgate operation

Just reading up a little on the tailgate operation. When I'm in the car, in park, with keys in the car with me, I can open the tailgate by pressing the button on the driver's door.

But I can't close it.

I know you're supposed to be able to lift up on that button to get it to close, but it doesn't work for me.

Same holds true if I'm outside the car and attempt to close it by holding the tailgate button on the key fob. I can open it, but can't close it.

Anybody else have this problem or is it just me?

you have to hold those buttons lifted/ pressed a little longer, until the tailgate starts moving

you should be able to close the tailgate via the driver door tailgate button by doing as you said: lifting it up, BUT if you just lifted it up then quickly let go, that’s not how it’s programmed to close. you have to lift and hold

the key fob tailgate button only opens it. by default (for safety reasons), it’s not programmed to close the tailgate whatsoever. if you want the key fob button to close the tailgate, you have to use coding software to program it (I use BimmerCode)

some will argue it can if BMW can prove the coding software caused the issue being claimed under warranty

Thanks for this. Tried it and it works. User error strikes again.

It will take a long time to figure out and understand all of the functions in a modern vehicle like the X5...reading and re-reading the manual can help as you go along.

The paper manual is ok, I also like the online version, go here, plug in your VIN and play around.. .. https://www.bmwusa.com/owners-manuals.html

The landing page looks like this.. ..

It's definitely easier to word search the PDF, but the paper manual has its uses. Note, the digital copy IN the vehicle does get updated as the OTA updates are applied, so would be the latest, most accurate version available and the videos can help, too.

I'm surprised noone ever mentions or rarely mentions BMW's "Driver's Guide" app. It has most, if not all of info the paper guide in your glove box has. It also has videos and other info available.

i use the Driver's Guide app on my iPhone regularly. it sits next to the MyBMW app. the last time i picked up the paper manual was 2 months into ownership, and i've never accessed the owner's manual via the online website.

Ditto...don't forget that there is an owners manual built into iDrive which has multiple search features...including multiple videos (animated explanations). You can search by keywords, pictures, videos, quick reference, etc.

Example of embedded owners manual in iDrive 7:

The Drivers Guide app was bathroom reading material for the first month or so of ownership for me

I hear ya. for me, I reference it when answering others’ questions, which is the “regular” part, not for my education
