FWIW, on a long road trip without recharging, I was seeing over 500-miles on a tank with the 45e. Now, if you want to drive 80 or 90-mph, since drag goes up exponentially, your results will be less.

I took me a while to get used to "the battery weight" in the caboose !
Now after 7,800 miles I love the car. 51 mph since factory....about 45% on electric power No complaints ! Funny, my 2018 X3 M40i seems "old fashion" compared to the new 45e. |

2022 With just over 17,000 miles
Great vehicle except lots of software gremlins that come & go. ( loss of navigation , not always recognizing correct key fob/driver, passenger side blind spot recognition intermittent ) Been to the dealer multiple times but same issues keep popping up but with no consistency. First BMW & probably my last because of the inability to get these issues resolved. |

Happy with my purchase, fwiw (2021 with ~8k miles), no regrets on the decision.
Lots of likes; disappointments are: - Driver assist systems (false positive rate too high to be less stressful for me to use) - Lack of time window for charging in software (had to buy separate box to enforce charging time window) - Software bugs (losing radio, CarPlay disconnects, back-up camera turning off, etc.) - Massage seats are pretty underwhelming - Remote pre-conditioning is flaky, not quick or reliable Overall, though, pretty happy on balance. There's a considerable amount of room for improvement, to be sure, and unfortunately BMW is going in the wrong direction wrt styling for future versions imho, but the 45e is probably still the best version of a PHEV SUV for my wants/needs.

I'm 4 months and 3,500 miles in. My only regret is not ordering 360* camera. I get nervous anytime I am near a curb with my 21" m-sport wheels. I was trying to save myself $750, but it will probably cost me twice that when I eventually curb these beauties.
Out of my control, but I also regret that BMW de-tuned the normal 40i engine. With full power from the 40i plus the e-motor, this thing would even be more amazing. |

I know I'm certainly an outlier here, but I actually don't mind that they did this. You basically have the most battle-tested, reliable, and bulletproof engine BMW has ever produced, detuned a bit to totally minimize engine stress (along with, of course, driving a substantial portion of the mileage on EV power). On paper, this should make the engine reliability pretty great for the 45e, and I personally value that probably more than an extra 25hp or whatever.

There was a brief period around May '22 when the electric lower portion of the tailgate was deleted and made manual. It was a really brief period though, think like only for a month.

Yes April-may production period. I got one of them. Do I want power lower gate? Absolutely yes. But it isn’t a deal breaker so far. Most of the usage of opening lower gate has been getting a stroller out, and use the gate has platform to change diaper for my new born. Most of the time, lower gate don’t open so far.

I missed the wireless charger due to the supply chain issues; certainly not a deal breaker, but I would have preferred to have it available when I ordered (mainly for the cell signal boost capability, which also got deleted). That's something I regret was unavailable by the time I ordered mine.

newbie - deciding on whether hybrid is the right choice for me
Hi all,
I'm looking into buying X5 and deciding whether plug-in is the right choice for my use case. I intend on mostly using it for long drives (300-400miles) one way and the lure of better fuel efficiency is alluring . However I don't think I understand how PHEVs work. I have an Elantra hybrid (not a PHEV) and its working is simple - it targets to keep the batter at about 50% charge - depleting and charging as necessary and hands me 50+ mpg whether short or long drives. So for a hypothetical one way drive of 400 miles on a fully charged X5 PHEV - what efficiency could one expect ? The thought of the car dragging 600 extra pounds when battery is fully depleted scares me as there's no advantage at that point. Insight from owners is highly welcome ! |

To estimate a 400 mile trip, we can do this. About 35 mile will be cover by fully charged battery. Rest will be operate as a non plug in hybrid. For highway driving, hybrid play very little role. Cruising at 75kWh, assume you will get 28mpg for 365 miles. |

A PHEV shines more when you're doing stop and go where it has enough EV power to drive the vehicle without the ICE turning on at all around a city or low-speed suburbs. Out on a long highway run, you'll get a little boost from the EV motor when accelerating, and a bit or regeneration when slowing, but say on a limited access highway with the cruise control on, it may only help a little bit. There, a pure ICE may be better. A nice side benefit is that the HVAC is entirely EV driven, so you can precondition the cabin even while parked in a closed garage IF you've left it with enough charge.
I'll second the above, in that on long trips without recharging, I tend to see about 28-mpg at 70-75 mph. Some have reported more. Running around town in stop and go with a depleted battery will be worse than the ICE, as it's heavier. Once up to speed, the weight isn't that much of a differentiator. |

Regret is went with luxury seats and climate control. The seats are firmer because of this. Just my opinion.
Love the ride and Apple CarPlay integration. Executive package with sky lights are awesome. Installed level 2 charger and almost drive full electric. Long drives are fun and learnt that need battery for precondition. So long drives are using battery control mode. |
