I thought the only difference between the "base" LED headlights and the Laserlights was the high beam performance of the Laserlights. I know this topic been discussed to death here, but this quote from the article is confusing to me - "Its base headlights earn a poor rating, largely due to excessive glare from the low beams." So, are the low beams different than those of the Laserlights? Or is there some other anomaly or misunderstanding present?

They are different fixtures so perhaps that is what causes the glare. The lasers wouldn't have any effect since they are only for high beam.

In USA same headlights as led standard ones only difference is over 30 something miles a hour in ideal conditions the laser high beams turn on ! Bmw is so vague on this subject even people doing reviews don't know how they work !! But you need them for the halo daytime running lights or the x5 looks like a Hyundai with the standard halos

damn beat me to it. I don't think they tested the lasers personally because I've seen their range firsthand and they can light up signs a half mile down the road

that's not entirely accurate. The low beams are obviously different maybe due to the housing or output change. Lasers are bright and shine further than my G01 X3 which had Full BMW Adaptive LED lights. That car had the same distance as the X5 diagram shown for lasers which tells me they didn't test them unless they got a bypass to make them work strictly for testing.


see below. My X3 certainly had worse headlights. I'm going to see if IIHS tested the lasers directly if they reply to my inquiry

It is likely to be different as they have totally different designs.

Previous gen 3 series' adaptive LED headlight has a much more powerful LED than the standard LED headlight. So it possible that different LEDs were used. Someone have to look inside the headlight fixture to find out.

Due to the different design and the "Full Adaptive" nature of the LED headlights that is part of the laser light package, It's much more uniform and also cuts down on the glare.
If you notice, in the Standard LED Headlight, only the outer one illuminate, and the Lens on it helps in making it a wider spectrum, compare to the Laser Light design, where both the Outer and Inner one illuminates, which really helps in maintaining the wider spectrum while keeping the glare in check. So this is the case where 2 is better than one.

Do let us know if they reply. I've asked them a question before and I did receive a response. I was hoping the laser headlights would be off the chart, but this makes it seem like they we not activated and only the LED Highbeam was used.

I emailed and said that in more words or less. I know the lasers have better range from experience. I don't know if BMW gave them an option to use lasers while static so I'll post their reply when it comes through

Interesting read. The IIHS's ratings should add some info to the discussions re the functioning (or not) of BMW's safety features as well as which headlights to get, etc.

What is puzzling is they bring up base model low beams have excessive glare but aren’t all the low beams the same? It isn’t till you get to the high beams that the Lasers make a big difference. The article also states you must have the “executive trim” to get the laser headlights. As we all know you don’t necessarily need the executive trim as you can choose laser lights as a standalone option. You would also need to choose
“Driving Assistance Plus/pro” to get the advance safety tech.
In reality you should just get every option with the new X5 as none are so over-the-top it isn’t worth it.

It seems the fixtures make a difference possibly even additional LEDs in the laser fixtures. There is some discussion in this thread from last week when the award was announced.
