Yup was on the Tech Pack option when I placed my order in Jan. That was the only way to spec it on build.

I have it on my X5.

Didn't spec it when I ordered the car. I was able to purchase it as a subscription from the BMW connected website.

It's nice to have a build-in dashcam but the cameras are located on the outside of the vehicle and get dirty. The rear of the vehicle gets dirty extremely fast, so you have to wipe the camera clean every so often.

20 seconds before the impact. No info on how big the impact needs to be. I.e. heavy braking or an actual collision. Also, you'd think it would record on a horn honk like a Tesla, it doesn't.

You can manually trigger it by pressing and holding on the panorama button but you're still limited to the 40 seconds. 20 before and 20 after you trigger it.
Thanks mate. Hadn't thought about the external camera aspect. Bit short sighted by BMW as they could have integrated one into the internal camera housing used for HBA and speed limit recognition (I'm assuming like on the M4 it's in front of the rear view mirror) and also have their (horrid) OEM ACE 2.0 camera to learn from.

Not too worried about the 40 sec aspect though as that's similar to most after market cameras. The hard-drive should be more than adequate given most cameras record to SD card.
Is there any UK owners on this thread that has confirmed that that have the recorder? I'm currently on the 11 software and can't see the app, nor can I see it on the store. Oddly I just looked at the online config, and it confirmed that I should have it. See attached.
It's not available yet, don't panic!

It wasn't available when you ordered your car but has since been added to order hence the configurator difference.
So how do I get it? It's not on CD store either as an option
You have to wait until Bmw UK make it available on the CD store. Just keep checking, should be anytime now.

Wanted to sign up for the service today but the bmw ConnectedDrive website won’t let me add my credit card.
Even calling in didn’t help.

I have the same problem. Tried different browsers and devices. At least their sh**ty software issues cause them loss of revenue as much as they cause us all frustration.

Just to update this for anyone reading the earlier posts of mine in this thread - now that the DR can be purchased in the CD store (UK), you don't even need 11.2019 s/w for it to work. I was able to purchase it a few weeks ago for my car on 07.2019 s/w. Works perfectly.

I have a 2019 X5 that I took delivery of in late April of last year. At that time we never knew about the Drive Recorder. I was able to order it on the Connected Drive site for $99 / 3 yrs. By going into the Connected Drive site you will see if your X5 is optioned for the DR. If it is you'll see the two options for subscription (1 year or 3 years).

It's currently not available for ConnectedDrive USA markets with no estimated timeline on availability.

Don’t mean to hijack this thread but I don’t want to create a new one for a silly question. How do I know whether the recording feature is working properly?

Go into the app on the car and create a recording.

Play that recording back, it should have recorded the 20 seconds PRIOR to you pressing record on the app.

Thats how I checked mine.

Yap, but if doctorttt really wants to test it, he's going to have to crash the car.

You can also trigger manual recording by a long press of the wide angle camera button and by taping the touchscreen if you configure the DR app on the display home screen.

Oh ok, I didn’t know whether the “app” or the “system” was actually working behind the scene without any user input/intervention/setup, etc. i have a separate dash cam for front and rear anyway. Since Drive Recording is an advertised feature, I am curious about its functionality.

Ok, so here are some thoughts on the Drive Recorder since I see information here is all over the map. I optioned it in my X6 M50d and had to take the Parking Assistance Plus as well.

It has its own app where you set all the details regarding the lenghth of recording, before and after the event (which is either a car crash or a simple press of a button). You can set the app to come up in one of the home widgets or even as one of the shortcut buttons 1-8.

As said, it records max 40s, 20s prior and 20s after the event. The available BMW storage space is enough to get some 12 videos recorded, after that it notifies you that it will overwrite the oldest one if you record one more. You can also export one by one or all at once to a USB stick. Very easy to use.

There is also an option to select which cameras should be active during recording time, front only, rear only, both, or all four, including lateral ones. Video quality is 480p.

I took the option because it sounded like a cool gadget and it was a cheap add on. I miss better quality, can't use it for personal montage videos of nice panoramic driving sceneries or whatever. Also, how am I gonna post a video on FB from my cell phone when I can only export it to a USB stick?? So some work involved here...I'd post a sample video, but I'm on my cell now

Just called BMW and complained I couldn't complete the purchase online. The agent tried doing it over the phone and even her system didn't work.

Apparently there is a "portal outage" for Canada for the next 5 hours whilst they try to reset it.

*Sigh*

P.S I am in Canada with MY2019 now on istep 03/2020.30.

But , that might have saved me grief, the swine who clipped my drivers mirror just before i veered off to the Erskine bride, I'd have had him on camera, saved me £130 for new wing mirror glass and the (very reasonable) £20 quid to polish the marks the flapping mirror left on my door... ( cough up or i show your boss the footage)

This is what the icon looks like. It works well and easy enough without installing wires and removing panels in your X5.
Only if it could work when parked.
