Pardon the dirt but we've got the same issue with the cover not being molded to the contour of the body. Two corners are bad the other two are ok. We took delivery 12/8 for those asking about build dates.

Noticed mine was worse in colder temperatures than when it is warm. Mentioned it at my recent service and it is a known issue. They replaced it under warranty. Apparently the issue is caused by misalignment of the arm / hinge.

Brought mine up with the dealership. Their on-site expert said that it was a known issue and there wasn't any fix yet. Suggested to mention it each service and eventually they'll have a solution.

That's poor on their part considering:

That is unacceptable as far as I'm concerned. Mine is perfect. I would be demanding that they find a solution as this is not part of the design. I would point them in the direction of other X5's on the lot and in the showroom that don't look like that. They need to find a way to fix that. My car got delivered with a dent / crease in the door and a chipped rim. The rim was replaced with a new one and they were able to remove the dent / crease from the door.

It's intentional.
Warped door makes fueling more comfortable.

(Sorry...too much time at home lately)

Yeah, just like the back seats where wrinkles make it more comfortable

I think the folks in SC have forgotten what Quality Control means. Sad.

Mine has that problem too.

Mineral white, Jan 2019 build.

Took it to the dealer, they replaced it under warranty, but the replacement looks the same.

The flap functions normally, so am letting it be for the moment.

20 year buying BMW's, found X cars no match in quality to the cars made in Germany, it is more painful with the X5 as it cost nearly double a 5 series, but simply never felt like double, felt always inferior quality wise. we waiting for our new X5 due this summer, hopping they improved, our exiting 2017 X5 had to go back to the dealer within a week, the seat control box with seat switches come off, apparently the screw snapped as it was not put properly. the dashboard chrome bar does not line up with the air vent, the car was delivered like this, an eye sore can only be missed if you blind. the plug cap just like in this post, it simply out of line, and cannot be missed, it is simply very poor quality checks on cars before leaving the factory. BMW is simply no longer a Premium brand as we use to know it, let face it when you Package the options and can no longer have every option available individually, only one thing come to mind, mass volume approach, it remind me of VWs ways.

Gas door on my new M50i is perfectly flush. I simply don't understand
how some of these shown got out of the factory- absurd . A bottom of the line Kia wouldn't pass QC with this.

But even more outrageous is dealer telling customer that there is no"fix"! This is a simple plastic piece with a hinge, of course it can be corrected - simply order a new gas door & hinge.

For everyone confidently stating their fuel cap is ok just be wary - mine looked ok for the best part of 12 months. It seemed to be worse in different temperatures, from memory when it was warmer last summer.

Don’t flame me, but mine has/had same issue, sort of flattened out. I grabbed both top and bottom with each hand and very slightly bent top and bottom in. Looks normal now. The door is very thin, and the plastic inner liner provides a lot of support. I’m thinking that the difference in thermal expansion rate of the dissimilar materials causes the door to flatten or bow depending on the temp.
