I have a obd link mx i use for bimmercode.
My engine light came on today when i started the car.

Can bimmercode read the engine fault codes or can the obd device do it with a different app?

Quick google search shows the most common cause of this error is the fuel cap. Either its not on right, or is malfunctioning.
