BMW X5 question
Hi,
My wife and I just purchased a 2019, X5 xdrive50i, with 39k miles on it. We also purchased an extended warranty through the BMW dealership. We are somewhat new to the BMW family, although we have owned a 2019, 430 xdrive convertible, for the last year and have loved it. Previously, we have always been an Infiniti family, so we are new to the X5's. We have 5 days to return it and have been reading some issues, that pose concerns regarding the N63 engine and the heat inside and oil consumption. Although, this may be a concern, more concerning are the transfer case issues I am reading about and at low miles. How concerned should we be? Our warranty should cover them, but once fixed, will these be ongoing issues? We are fully aware of operational costs of a BMW, but do not want to get into a constant money pit. Coming from Infiniti for over 20 years and Nissan 20 before, we have been virtually trouble free. I would appreciate any input. We really love the car, but struggling with the decision if should we take it back and look for an X5 40i, instead. Not wanting to make this decision, without knowledge from other BMW owners who have more experience than we do on these cars. Thank You |

N63 might have issues especially if you up the boost but with extended warranty you should not care unless you keep the cay way beyond the warranty end date.
Most modern BMW's are pretty reliable until they are not. |

The N63 issues are mainly the original one, the Tu and Tu2. The current N63 is a TU3. It's much improved. I'm not sure what year the TU3 came out, but if you have a TU3 I wouldn't worry about the motors id worry about all the electronics in the car.

The extended warranty was a good call, but I wouldn't take on a 2019 N63, with it's problems becoming notorious. I'd return it and get a 40i with B58 inline 6. The B58, in contrast to the N63, was named to Ward's World's 10 Best Engines four times, in 2016 ,2017 2019 in the X5, and again in 2020.
Some people are really married to the V8, and of course like any troubled engine, plenty of people have had no issues. But unless you are planning some real heavy lifting with your X5, why assume that kind of potential liability, even with the extended warranty. If you have not driven an X5 40i, I highly recommend you do so. I have loved mine with no looking back. Good luck! ETA: I am on my third B58, and have loved them all. It's plenty of power for me.

Not to be a complete eggplant, but if you value reliability and minimal mechanical issues over the driving experience, then a 5 year old BMW might not be for you.
They're mostly well-built, but more slip through the cracks than its Japanese competition. |
