Dealer is unable to fix faulty Assisted Driving
I'd like to share a story with you guys.
I own a X5 50e, delivered January 2024. It has been driving faultless, until past november. Then the "assisted driving" stopped working. I could still start it, but after a while (sometimes a minute, sometimes 15 minutes ) it gave an error: "Assisted Driving is limited " 2-3 sensor faults appeared on the idrive, and you had to restart the Assisted Driving. I visited my dealer to fix it for the first time somewhere in December 2024. The dealer replaced the steering wheel, there were errors about the sensors in the steering wheel. When driving home after this fix, I could not start the Assisted Driving. I was told the car needed some learning/calibration, until it would work. The function never worked again. It was now completely unavailable. The later decided at the end of December to replace the camera below the mirror. Car went into the shop, and after many hours the problem was not fixed. I was advised to bring the car in in January and they would take a thorough look at the defect. So January 13th the car went back to the dealer. The first week the dealer could not fix the problem. The second week "BMW engineers" took a look at it. The dealer was told to replace the RSNECU. This is the ECU that controls all the inputs from all the sensors and translate it into an automated action. After install this a faulty radar came up. Radar was replaced, but needed coding the day after. The car started updating itself during the night and somewhat bricked the whole system. After a few days they could revamp the car somehow. However, we are now almost 4 weeks later and the problem is still there. Assisted driving is unavailable. The last thing they are going to try is to replace the HeadUnit. The reason for this is that BMW detects communication from the car with their servers ( needed for Assisted Driving ) and many radars, connections, ECU's, ... whatever have been replaced. So there is one part in the chain that has not been replaced: the Head Unit. They are also thinking that it has something to do with the car running software 11/24. That there is something in this version that makes the assisted driving unavailable when the car has XPEL on the PDC sensors. A colleague has the same XPEL installation, but is still running the older software version. Faultless ... They are unable to downgrade the software version. Long story short: the dealer is clueless at this point. It's quite scary that cars have become this complicated, that dealers are not in the possibility to fix errors like these. I will keep updating this thread. Hopefully the head unit was the missing link. Otherwise we have an issue and I am not sure how we will fix this. |

Got an update this week.
They have unmounted the old Head Unit, and are no waiting for the new one. Unfortunately the new new one fails to arrive. There’s none in spare and transferring one from a existing car is not possible as these systems are linked to the VIN. I guess we will keep on waiting and hoping this is the final solution. Car is already more than a month at the dealer, although the dealer is trying it’s best to get it solved. Last edited by rabbit1986; 02-15-2025 at 07:53 AM.. |

Hopefully it comes soon.
As an aside though, they are not linked to the VIN. Dealers generally aren't allowed to pull parts from one vehicle to put into another.

OP is in Belgium so that wouldn't apply. Even if in the states a Lemon Law action, at least in some states, would likely not be viable since a lack driving assistance may not meet the criteria.

Car is still not fixed.
The dealer cannot find the fault. Now BMW is going to look at it more often. And when you know that there’s a case open since January 31th … you know it’s not an easy one. Warranty has been upped by BMW to 5 years in total. It was already upped to 4 years because of the Idalia storm 😍 Car has been at the dealer since January 13th. Not expecting a lot anymore. At some point you become careless and frustrated together. I just feel bad about this car. First it was in the storm in Charleston, now this crap. Feels like a really bad vibe with the car. |
