Max Tire Sizes for iX
So I ordered the stock 21" with 255/50R21 tires, and I'm definitely going with aftermarket 22" summer/daily and 20" winter/off-road setups and selling my OEM 21" (will be available in September for you guys).
I'm going to be putting 30-40k miles a year on the iX, and 21" tires are going to be ~$2k a set which is pretty ridiculous, regardless of the brand either in 255/50R21 or 275/45R21. 255 width isn't really enough rubber for me as I plan to drive the iX pretty hard on corners so I'm looking at at least 285 wide and considering up to 295/305 wide on the 22s. I don't care if there's a 10-15% range hit as I'm ok charging slightly more often and saving 30-60% on tires compared to the 21's. For 22", I know stock is 275/40R22 with a 22x9.5 wheel ET37, so a +0 fitment of 285/40R22 should be more than acceptable at the same offset and slightly higher tire weight. I'm curious if anyone has gotten far enough to see if 285/45R22, 295/40R22, or 305/40R22 fitments are possible with lower offsets. I would love to be able to do 285/45R22 for more meat. I'm getting custom forged wheels so I'm flexible with offsets. For 20", I'm looking at having 265/50R20 (many reasonably priced tires at this volume size) or 285/50R20 (heavier) for the winter (studless) or hybrid A/T with 3PM rating setup. Again, would 305/50R20 be possible with lower offsets? Also, is running a staggered setup just stupid on specifically this platform? Thanks for everyone's insight and input. I've had aftermarket wheels on all my 10+ cars over the last 20 years so let's set the answers to "Intermediate +" mode. |

I'll be interested in hearing the results on this. I'm not sure if anyone has really gotten far along enough to try custom wheels and tires, if so they haven't posted here.
As you probably already know, it's just a question of whether they'll rub when turned to the extremes. I'm guessing that might be a motivation for going staggered. I like the idea of 265/50 R20 for winters. I've got a winter set for my e-tron that is 255/50 R20. Same bolt pattern, bore, and ET25. So they may sit a bit more flush to the fender, but they're within the 2-3% size range and I think I can make them work until they wear out and then get the 265s on the same wheels. I've had good luck with these wheels on the e-tron and they don't seem to be particularly range sapping despite not being a classic "filled in" EV wheel. |

Will be interesting to see any real world range effects from customization, and how significant. On a gasoline-powered car, who cares? On these, hmmmm....

I'm very curious as to the 22's since i'm getting forged, but non-aero, vs the OEM 21's (I think non-forged?) but aero. We will see whether the reduction in unsprung weight from going forged wins out against the ugly aero designs. As long as I net out 280mi-ish range while going 85-90mpg LA to Vegas (charge at in Baker 200mi out), I'm fine with it. |

So you can definitely fit 285/50R20, but you will need about a +25 offset. You can use the stock 20” iX wheels or you can use your X7 wheels. I’m seeing +35 offset on a stock X7 20” wheel so you will need to run 10mm spacers and slightly longer wheel bolts, but they will work. |

I am excited that some who are seeing alternatives to OEM wheels are smartly looking at forged, typically much lighter weight wheels as a compensatory factor to their going with wider/heavier tires.
Options are always good. Personally, my wife and I really like these factory 22”’s. |

Yes it is YOUR photo. Best one everywhere of that wheel. Better than every BMW official photo, better than every one of 25 video screen grabs I have taken.
Best of the BEST for sure. Thank you! |

Lastly, your picture since we have not yet seen a bi-color Bronze 1023 in real life, also sealed that option for our car.

With EVs and their heavy reliance on coasting and aero, we didn’t use to see this type of thing with ICE’s where the conventional thinking was forged = better. To maximize range and lighten the wheels, they must be MONOBLOCK forged aluminum or magnesium/CF. 2 and 3 piece forged are actually MUCH heavier than stock as evidenced by my 240-250mi range with 3-piece forged 22s. IMO BMW did a really good job with those stock 22’s. By the way guys, please tone it down. I really enjoy this forum’s wealth of experience and constructive discourse. We are better than that. |

Just swapped wheels. The OE 22in Bicolor wheels plus Pirelli tires weigh between 75 and 77 lbs. My Asanti ABL 27, 22x9, +32mm, flow-formed wheels with Continental DWS tires weigh between 64 and 66 lbs (bathroom scale weights). This seems to be quite accurate. Listed weight for wheels is 30.3 lbs + 31 lbs for tires and I estimate 3 to 5 lbs for sensors and balance weights. Hopefully a weight saving of around 11 lbs per corner will offset any loss of range due to aero.

I'm looking for tire options for my Ix with stock 20" rims. I live on a steep driveway that ices up, and I want to run Nokian Hakkapelita 10s with studs. They are available in size 275/50 R20 XL which are 30.8 tall and 10.8" wide. Can I run these without any offset issues?
Can anyone suggest a source for lighter 20" rims for winter use ? |

The stock offset of the OEM 20" wheel is +28. With this offset, you can run the following tire sizes on the OEM wheel without rubbing: 275/50R20 (matches OEM diameter) 275/55R20 (I run this on my winter set, works great) 285/50R20 265/50R20 (shorter) 255/55R20 |

Curious if anyone is running 255/55r20 or 275/50r20 on stock 20” wheels and what the impact to range has been (and recommendations on a good AS for northeast US)?
I know tire model has impact as well as size so trying to balance range with AS performance. Eagle Touring were not good in winter and handling is so so. The longevity of tire is abysmal too. Was looking at 275/50r20 in the Hankook ION Evo AS SUV if anyone has experience. Just playing with the options and looking at the trade offs. Thx! |

I have 255/55r20 Michelin PS4AS. Been over 4k now. The wear is much better than the OEM. Though, there is no way they will last anywhere close to the advertized 45k mi. Ride quality is fine and everything else (grip, breaking distance etc) is great. I live in SouthFla so I looked for tires with good wet performance.
The range dropped about 10% for comparable driving. I have seen 3.8mi/kWh on those though. Really depends on the way you drive. |

It’s much more about the compound/LRR (EV vs non-EV) of the tires vs the size. Most people report 8-10% range drop changing from OEM/EV to non-EV tires like the PSAS4. Even OE to OE, BMW reports 20” range as similar to 22”.
You are correct, however, to think that you should go as narrow as you are comfortable with for grip levels to maximize efficiency, especially if you want higher winter grip levels with a 3PMS A/S. I’m facing a similar decision right now. I just did the last 50k miles with my 285/45R22 and they’re just about worn to the wear bars so I need to change the tires. I was maxing out around 240-250 miles from 99%-1% at 93% current battery health, so consider it a 7% range hit on battery capacity and 20% hit on wheels and tires. I have (much heavier than OE) 3-piece forged non-aero wheels that give me another 10% range hit in addition to the tires (lesson learned, do monoblock forged next time). Regarding the tire size change. I’m deciding between 275/45R22 (more cushion, OEM treadwidth for slightly better efficiency) or 285/40R22 (slightly more grip). Probably going with 275/45R22 and a grippier tire like the Nitto NT420V (I buy at wholesale so it’s less than half the cost of your Michelins). BZ101 looks like you’re in Mass. I lived in Cambridge for 4 years and Brighton for 2 so I’ve been through some bad winters. If you’re willing to spring for real studless tires on OEM wheels that’s the cheapest/best option or just get a cheap set of 20s with dedicated winters so it’s an easy swap. Some of those off-ramps get really icy off Mass Pike (I used to go to Wellesley a couple of times a week for 2 years 😉 and with a heavy car like the iX you want full confidence in full winters. Throw them on around Halloween and pull them off around Patriot’s Day. You can blast 70-80mph on Mass Pike in deep snow with winters. |
