So I am sure there have been a few posts on this already. But in short my wife needs a car asap (her car was recently totaled). I have a few X5 45e on hold at MSRP and would be eligible for the $7500 federal tax credit.
With that said, I also have a very well spec'd 40i at 9% off. Which one would you choose based on this? I have charging infra at home etc. with the discount it seems the only real savings is gas. She drives around 15-20 miles a day. Thoughts? |

Personally, I'd get the 45e. Assuming you can wait for the and are eligible for the full $7500 tax credit, that will lessen the differences in cost. I guess it might depend somewhat on the options in each package, but the ability to precondition is nice, and not needing to make that stop regularly at the gas station is a plus, even if your electricity costs are high. Depending on how long you keep it, it will likely retain value better.

Go for the 45e. Just the standard air suspension in itself makes it worth it.

I wouldn't get a vehicle without it but there are also many folks that wouldn't get it. It is going to depend on her driving habits and comfort level with it.

If you have mean to charge and can get $7500 incentive, then no brainer, 45e.
Missing either one on your case, take 40i. 9% off is very close to $7500 on these cars. Making upfront cost similar. If you don’t get $7500 incentive, It will be a long time before you can save enough gas to offset 9% of MSRP. And if you don’t plan to charge, then you a higher cost of operation even if you get $7500. |

According to folks on other threads there are thousands of known quality issues with the 45e. That alone should deter you.
For me, I'm sticking with my custom order and the full feature set available with the 2023 model year. If you're fine with no leather and no air suspension, the 40i is absolutely the way to go. |

FWIW, the 45e has been in production since summer 2018 as a 2019 (MY depends somewhat on where it's sold), so it's not new, nor is this BMW's first PHEV. One bought today is pretty reliable.

You could still use it plus it includes the extra safety features. I use mine as close to 100% of the time I'm driving no matter what road types.

When does the X5 50e take center stage. I read that it will have nearly 100 more HP to around 480 and a 50 mile range on electric. Sounds like some significant upgrades are on the way for this PHEV.
The 50e will be desireable to a far broader range of upper level brand buyers at that point. Last edited by scungilio; 10-18-2022 at 08:02 AM.. |

I owned a 2019 40i for 18 months and now have two 45es (2021 and 2023). I had more quality issues with my 40i than my older 45e by far. Who knows why.
I avoided the DAP package on purpose for both 45e custom builds. I don’t have the inherent trust in the automated systems that others do. But overall (to me) the 45e is the more comfortable vehicle and more fun to drive, which I suppose explains why I purchased two of them. |
