Went in to the dealer to check up the steering wheel vibration issue. And here is what it resulted.... (I have the 22inch M sport wheel)

The dealership said they scratched it when driving into the working bay, and willing to repair it. But I'm wondering is it reasonable to ask them to replace it? Based on the damage? (Maybe use the rim & tire protection for my lease?)

Sad day and any advice is appreciated!

the dealership scratched my rim

Wow, did they proactively tell you they did that, or did you see it and bring it up? If the former, kudos to them.

It looks like they took a little chunk out of it. I don't know how you can really fix that.

Yeah they did admit it proactively by texting me, I am not sure if this is a serious damage or how they will fix it

I would just ask for a new wheel, that looks pretty damaged but have no clue as to where the line is between fixable and not.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

If this story helps... several years ago I got new tires installed on my old Audi S4, and the totally inept dealer gouged all the way around the edge of all four wheels. They got a professional to refinish them, and I could not tell at all that they had been repaired.

Since the dealer was so pro-active in telling you about it I would give them a chance to repair it. If the result doesn't look good then as for a new wheel.

The only thing about the damage the is worrisome is that it appears there was a chunk taken out of the rim of the wheel. From the picture, you can't tell if the damage is just cosmetic or structural.

A big enough chunk out of the rim may weaken the wheel and there may be a crack hidden from view.

I agree with dan321, give them a chance to fix it. I would be clear with the SA by informing them your expectations for after the repair. Also make sure they record this for the lease expire time. When leasing, I would think a paper trail would be best for anything.

I would get a new rim. BMW replaced all 4 alloys on my F15 because they had corroded around the centre cap. If the rims have been merged or repaired BMW UK policy is to refuse warranty replacement or ask for a contribution to cost depending on the condition of the rim.

The counter to that is replacement rim will only be warranty for 2 years as opposed to 3 for original rim at least in UK.

It is repairable. This was my wife wheel before and after repair and repaint. Not repaired by bmw but a shop that is specialized in it.

But I let repair and repaint all 4.. I hooe you don't see color difference after they do 1 wheel

Forget repair. That’s something you do to save money when you did the damage. No way would I live with a wheel doctor repair on a new BMW. The finish is never as good as oem either. That is new wheel time with that kind of damage and possibly a new tire. I have had dealers replace my truck wheel for just scratching the side. The OP lost a chunk of forged metal.

Don't accept a repair. Ask for a new alloy. A repair is just cosmetic.

Vote strongly for replacement here. That chunk out at the rim tire bead line may cause a leak or worse, that's not just cosmetic damage, that's functional damage.

And anyway, dealer staff, particularly at BMW rather than some fly-by-night shop, are expected to be experienced and careful with client assets. Humans make errors, that's not a surprise or a big thing on its own ... but how they take responsibility for those errors is a big deal.

Thank you for all the advice everyone!

I agreed to have the dealer repair it first, I will also consider asking for a new rim if the repair is not satisfactory to me. I also took a picture of the damage in case I need it in the future.

It is just sad that some dealers cannot get this right, by bringing the car into the dealership for service I am trusting their professionalism, and this is what happened.

Have a great day everyone!

Keep us posted on the outcome!!! I agree with you but also understand people make mistakes so if they own up to it, to me it is what makes someone great. I hope all ends well with your rim repair.

I once had a dealer (Cos BMW in Colorado) run my car into a wall during an oil change resulting in a 6 week repair to the front end. I was not happy...

Hi Everyone:

Just came back with updates:

Picked up the car today and honestly, I cannot find out where it was damaged, I consider myself having pretty sharp eyes and they seemed to done a pretty good job.

I think they repainted the whole rim because I can feel there is a subtle difference about the textures on the rim, but so far I think I can live with it.

Thanks everyone for the advice!

By the way do you ever notice some sound when changing gears? I heard something when shifting into/out of the Drive gear, just want to confirm if this is normal, it does not happen to other gears, only Drive.

Still think you should have gone for a full replacement. Just wait for the paint to get chipped or when you get a tyre change and the force of levering off the tyre cracks the filler they used.

I agree the repaint may not hold up as well as the factory finish. OEM wheels are powder coated. Refinished wheels use a wet paint. Durability is typically less with wet paint.

As far as the filler, they likely used all metal. This is a good aluminum filler and holds up very well, if applied correctly.

100% repairable and to those on here that say places use wet paint? What a load of nonsense
