x6M Test Drive

I currently own a 2017 M3 Comp moving into an SUV for additional space for work. I test drove an x6M Comp, this is for anybody considering and unable to actually test drive one of these cars.

To my surprise the vehicle is not much bigger than my M3 when sat in the car and the rear leg room is probably less. The most frustrating thing for me on my test drive is how the car suffers from power in the 50mph plus range. After my test drive I was so concerned about the lack of power I did some research and found it 3 seconds slower than an M5 60-100 and 1 second slower than my M3. It feels when driving that the car lacks power where it matters midrange. I drove it with all assists OFF! I am an M3 driver !

Not sure if any others have come from the M3 to an M SUV and feel the same. Probably gonna wait for the new M3 or M5 LCI as the M SUV does not feel like an M brand vehicle.

To be fair the X6M is nearly 700kg heavier than the outgoing M3/M4. And at the end of the day we're comparing apples and oranges here.

Coming from a M3 myself i can't say i've ever felt my X5MC feeling slower in any circumstances. One thing that i do notice is that the transmission setting has a dramatic impact on how eager the car is to take off. In D3 with the transmission in Sport+ its pretty immediate. Not M3 immediate but I don't think any SUV would be. If the transmission is in D2 and engine in Sport I do feel i want a little more responsiveness so my daily setting has been trans in D2 and engine in Sport+. Keep in mind no X5M/X6M or even the M5 will feel like your M3. Wasn't designed to be and never will.

As for roominess i can't comment about the X6M but the X5 is massive compared to the my M3. Not so much legroom space but more so width, shoulder room.

Alan - can you please educate me on the differenc between the D1-D3 settings and the S1-S3 settings for the transmission? My manual is in my car which is being wrapped at the moment so I can’t access it (and can’t seem to find it on the internet for some reason). Thanks in advance.

D1 - D3 are the automatic settings for the transmission D3 being more aggressive shift points holding the gear longer and higher RPM. S1-S3 are for manual shifting.

Thanks. D1-D3 makes sense, but why would there be multiple settings for manual shifting? I would have thought manual shifting is manual shifting regardless of whether its S1 or S3...I’m obviously missing something.

The levels controls how instant and aggressive the shifts are in manual mode

Thanks for the advice, I have to buy the SUV as I have followed my dream and when I am not coding I am doing alot of woodwork. I need to tow a trailer and need the storage space. Probably grab the x5m for more space. Shame the US version does not have the hide away hitch that the EURO guys get. Gonna have to install one hopefully I can use these forums for help.

I had an M3 and was also given an X4 Loaner and a 330i loaner while my car wasa being repaired.

My X5 M50i easily feels heavier in comparison to the above. I think what you may be feeling is the weight. It's not something that you can easily overcome.

Having said that, it's fast enough and the quality of life improvements make the car a better daily driver IMO.

Does that hide away euro hitch have the same tow capacity rating as a US vehicle would have?

Why not just get a regular X5 or other equivalent SUV and keep the M3 as a weekend/track toy?
