Selling Current Car Help

I sold my BMW X3 m40i because we needed more space and purchased a 2024 Volvo XC90 Plug in for space. I know. I know. Major Mistake.

Now I am negotiating for a MY25 allocation X5, but still need to get rid of the Volvo. Any advice on the best site or place to get the highest price? Head toward specific dealerships or areas of the country? I am willing to do whatever to maximize the price and get rid of it. Open to any feedback.

ps I went to Carmax yesterday and was insulted by the offer.

If you’re willing to put up with the wannabes and tire kickers I’ve had good success with Autotrader.com and Cargurus has a robust site. I sold my Cayenne to a private party for $8k more than the best dealer trade offer.

Carvana, the process is SUPER easy! They also give you right around market value for the ride as well. In addition, if you have existing finance, they will do all the leg work to take care of that.

I've also had good success using Autotrader. Sold 3 cars using their service. Just sold a 2017 Mercedes GLC for $4k more than the BMW dealer offered me in trade.
-Currently impatiently waiting on the 2025 X5 40i that I ordered. Good luck!

I have requested instant cash quotes, but most won't even quote me because the car is too new and I think a plug-in. I can't find hardly any online.

You say "purchased" in OP, but is it actually leased?

I've sold 2 cars in the last 6 months... one with title in hand so it wasn't an issue but the other, leased, had to payoff and get titled before any of the reseller/cash offer sites would touch it. I consistently got the best offers from Autonation but ultimately got the best price through AutoTrader (which I've used a bunch over the years). They used to just connect you to buyers but... AutoTrader has this new 'private seller exchange' which requires uploading a bunch of docs and takes some time, 10-20 days maybe because they're often slow to process/respond, but offers some buyer and seller protection for interstate transaction where buyer may be purchasing sight unseen (as was my recent case). They take a small cut tho on that type transaction.

Also, the buyer can arrange shipping themselves for a better price than AT PSE will quote them.

Keep in mind that the value of a trade-in is not taxed in NC so while you may receive more money elsewhere, it may be a net loss selling privately versus trading it in. I would get cash offers from CarMax (I know you said you were insulted but that may be the market), Carvana, Cargurus, etc. and then see if the dealer can match the highest.

I leased it and will finish the buyout process this week. I hate how companies stopped allowing third party buyouts and now I have an extra step to get rid of it. How fast did you sell the one you bought out?

Before buying it, check your state laws. It could be a very expensive mistake if you don't time it correctly. In some states you if you buy it and sell it within a specific period of time you don't have to pay sales taxes, in others it doesn't matter.

Paid the extra for overnight shipping of buyout docs from BMW. Once docs in hand got to local title/dmv to get processed asap - took about 10 biz days to receive new title (your locale may be different). All told, from time I paid off to time $ landed from sale, took about a month. I was able to list with AT PSE once I had the payoff docs (they accepted those, but ultimately needed new title to close the transaction - so you could be listing it while waiting on that other piece).

And TurtleBoy makes a couple of excellent points - I was able to get more from private party to offset + the tax benefit of a direct trade... but your State and situation may be different. Good idea to research all that first

Good point. I am in South Carolina though. We don't believe in upfront taxes as such described - flat tax of 500 dollars at most. We slowly milk it out of you through yearly property taxes.

Sold my Rivian to Carmax coming up on 3 weeks. They offered 4k more than any other dealership near me. BMW wanted to give me 8k less than Carmax. I tried carmigo and that was a disaster. The dealer who offered $70,500 became non responsive after while we tried to negotiate after the auction ended.
