The end of the Camaro after 57 years

GM says goodbye to a popular model after 57 years
Dec 15, 2023
General Motors (GM) according to documents filed with the state of Michigan, will lay off just over 1,300 workers at two of its Michigan plants early next year.
GM said in October that it plans to convert the Orion plant to electric vehicle production in 2025. The company had initially planned to bring the electrified version of the plant online in 2024, but pushed the date back to protect profit margins.
The decision to end the production of the Camaro, Brad Franz, director of Chevrolet car and crossover marketing, told the Detroit News, was the result of an evaluation of the company's "portfolio offerings for progress toward our EV future and sales demand."

I would rather this be a wake than a funeral for the Camaro
It all started here.

It’s insane this whole conversion to EVs that will completely upend the automotive world and its suppliers. At the end of the day - there will be no meaningful changes to benefit the environment as most of the transportation pollution comes from heavy duty trucks, buses, cargo ships and Airplanes.

The weekend “affordable” sportscar contributes NOTHING to the environmental pollution yet its the first one to go.

Personally I never liked Camaros but still sad to see it go and the Hemi cars as well - Charger, Challenger, 300C.

I had a 95 Z28 way back in the day. Never want to work on an LT1 car again.
Also had LS1 Vert Camaro. I would own another one of them. I paid almost nothing for the 1 I had because seller's wife wanted it gone. I only sold it because electrical gremlin that I couldn't find. It would drain the battery after a couple days.

Rather buy another LS1 TA, though. Yup, owned 1 of them too back in the day. I don't have a mullet =p

First generation 67-69 Great
Second generation 1970–1981 Growing on me all the time.
Third generation 1982–1992 Sad waste of plastic
Fourth generation 1993–2002 Not much better that the third gen
Fifth generation 2010–2015 Getting back to it roots

My favorite Z28 even if it is a SS.
Car and Driver’s 1969 ‘Blue Maxi’
The car, Schmidt would eagerly explain, was the Blue Maxi, built as a Car and Driver magazine project by Roger Penske’s racing operation in a quest to create the ideal American GT.
To create its ideal performance coupe in 1969, Car and Driver secured a Camaro SS350 equipped with four-speed transmission, Rally Sport package, air conditioning, and other options. The car was sent to Penske Racing in Pennsylvania, where Mark Donohue and Sam Eckerd supervised the build. Chevrolet supplied an LT-1 high-performance 350-cid small-block V-8, which would debut in the 1970 Camaro Z/28 and Corvette. At Penske, the Camaro received tweaked suspension, racing brakes and Stahl headers.

3rd gen was not a waste. Interior was crap, but exterior styling & drivetrain (350 TPI) plus handling were all great for the time.

5th Gen cars were pigs

I would draw the generation lines differently, but sticking to your years:

First - agree
Second - love it, personal experience with this one, very raw
Third - quite a few personal memories with these, but average automobiles
Fourth - the worst imo
Fifth and sixth - agree, no personal experience, just appreciation from afar

Generations as I see and experienced several of them:
67-69
70-73
74-78
79-81
82-92
93-02
Then as you wrote

Has it really been that poor a performer sales wise? I must admit I never considered it despite being a hard core Holden man. I was cross shopping E92 M3, Mustang and 911 (997) convertibles, the Camaro never came up as an option as I don't like the look of it and the engine is too big/bottom end happy (I wanted to wring something out a bit).

Its not a great convertible or v6/i4 because there are compromises. If you are looking for the highest performance/handling, the 1LE, SS and ZL1 are all excellent cars with outstanding chassis. But that kind of buyer is willing to make a few sacrifices for outright performance. The masses that fund these models…not so much. The sacrifices are not huge to overcome for a performance enthusiast…but there simply aren’t enough by the numbers.

And I agree with above, gen 3 and 4 were pretty bad, euro and Japanese cars were kicking our butt in those days and these were not good, with very few exceptions. I had a gen5 and it was decent. I have the gen6 and it knocks it out of the park for handling and driving experience. Does way better at autoX than it has any right to and its take ford years to equal the handling performance. Chassis dynamics are top notch, but thats all more of a function of modern gm with ats-v/ct5 blackwings, and the competent engineering…rather than camaro lineage…as opposed to something like 911.

Camaro

I'm surprised about that decision...I live in Texas...I see the Camaro EVERYWHERE. Just as common as the Mustang. Heard/Read the LT-1 was a BEAST that was an amazing handling and powerful engine.

The last ditch attempt was to make the LT1 model, which had way insufficient tires/grip for the size/power of the car. Ford had been doing this for years with the Mustang.

But think about it, every home *needs* an SUV or truck. They don't need a Camaro.

I beg to differ. The 80's for performance cars sucked but GM sucked more.
The Z28 came standard with the 5.0 L LG4 4-bbl V8 rated at 145 hp (108 kW) and was available with either a four-speed manual or three-speed TH200 lockup automatic transmission. The optional LU5 twin TBI 'Cross Fire Injection' 5.0 L (305 cu in) with functioning hood scoops was rated at 165 hp (123 kW) and was only available with an automatic transmission.

145 hp Camaro would get it's ass kicked by a Honda Civic.

The active hood ducts on late 80s Camaros were cool. The IROC and Z28 of those years were fun to bang around in.

IMO the Camaro had more cool factor than most quasi-sport coupes of the day: Mustang, Celica, etc.

I have always appreciated Camaros but have never once considered owning one. They don't do enough, and don't do it well enough for me.

Oh excuse me 245hp so a Integra could kick your ass.
