I think it depends on whether you opted for the mobility kit. I believe that when checked it replaces the spare tire. I didn't check that option (should have) and instead have a spare tire.

The mobility kit should give you enough air to get to a repair/wheel shop and avoid the dreaded tire change in the middle of a highway.

I didn't order the "space saver spare" option for my build.
With few reasonings (not serious though, every decision might come with some reasons & risks) 1) my build has run-flat tires 2) BMW free road assistance 3) Less weight & more chunk space 4) Never had flat tire for my previous cars (always changed the tires before they worn out) Totally understand the decision to have it too. So, it is really not a big deal for me. |

Just heard back from my SA, apparently,
You should have a mobility kit if there is no spare tire. Sometimes BMW offers a spare on some M models and sometimes a mobility kit, depending on availability Yeah, i've only needed the spare once and it was a fun one. I was driving my C300 Merc thru the smoky mountains, it was around 2am, we had pulled over to the side of the road to check out the night sky, as i tried to reenter the highway, the spot where the road ends and the dirt shoulder begins was super sharp and it ripped my tire off the rim lol However, having BMW roadside is definitely a boon. |

-they can weigh 50 lbs more than regular tires -they have materially harsher ride -they are not reparable if damaged -they are more expensive than non run flats. The positives are, you can avoid carrying around 50 lbs of donut spare + jack but the weight savings is negligible if it exists at all (https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1463803) Road side assistance can't repair a damaged run flat! Generally they can only install a spare or tow you to a service shop that will have to replace your tire (assuming they carry the correct matching RFT in stock! I think no shot with X5M tire sizes but possible with 275/45/20s). Not sure what security this provides you. I doubt anyone in this forum would get a flat from "wearing out" tires, it would only come from punctures or road hazards so replacement/changing frequently will not mitigate this. If you are spec'ing or looking at available cars, make sure you get the spare! The m-mobility kit is goop + a pump, I think you'd be better off with a plug kit, but would still much rather have the spare. |

Be thankful you can get a spare - prior to moving over to the X5M Comp I had RS4 and RS6 and all you get with them is a can of goo which is supposed to be sufficient but it isnt. Twice I had punctures and the can of goo was an absolute waste of time.
When I got the second RS6 I ended up buying a spare rim and tyre and just having cover made for it and sitting it on the back seat with seat belt over it. Was a life saver twice so worth the money. My new X5M Comp has the spare tire in the boot so I am a happy camper. |
