When i took the 335i the dealer actually took me out to a backroad that joined the freeway and told me to gun it, informing me that if i did get a speeding ticket i'd have to pay it, but to see how it went. So after notching up 160 in a 100 zone, in very little time at all, i then upon looking at the speedo and realising that i require my licence knocked the speed back to 100. But boy it was a rush!

so much for the break-in period. Maybe the dealer demonstrators are pre-tuned for extreme "gunning"??

Not sure, but the dealer did say that they weren't planning on selling the 335i's for ages, due to the 9mth waiting list on them, plus i don't know anyone who would buy one without seeing what it could really do.
It could also be a bit of the whole not my car syndrome, dealers are there to sell cars not look after them

Funnily enough they weren't lying, i tried offering 10k over sticker to take one on the spot and they wouldn't have a peice of it. As if they sold the demo's they'd have nothing for people to test drive, and the demand for the 335i is big, whereas the lower range models are available on the lot...

I'm soooo glad that I ordered my 335 in May of last year. I got mine with the first batch for customers in October (there was a smaller batch for dealers a couple of weeks earlier). I don't think I could stand to wait 9 months for my baby! (pun intended!)

I think it's partly a marketing exercise. Only release a few each month, create a long waiting list, make it sound like everyone wants one!!

^if true they'll lose a lot of customers. Im a upfront kind of guy and BS from from sales reps in dealerships means a loss of sale for them. Thats why my parents use me to negotiate the pricing of there cars for at least a year now.

I just watched a repeat show on SBS of Top Gear and it had the SLK55 AMG and i must say i was very impressed. If a few dealers try and knock me around with the 335 i am going to probably deposit on a AMG.

yeah agreed, but i really would rather pay less and buy a 335 but it depends on the dealers and on the m-sports kit that ive been waiting for ages to be made official in AUSTRALIA!!!!

yeah i know AMG is so very differen't. I could get a good price on it too(thanks to a very good working relationship with a MB dealer), but i prefer the Bimmer because it has a capacity to seat four ppl and i would also feel much safer. The SLK is too small for my liking. Nevertheless i still have it on my list.

I think the demand for teh 335i will go down a bit once when e93 335i cabrio arrives, i think delivery starts in may (from a chat i had with my dealer in december), and once the M3 is in the public domain there will probably be a bigger demand for that as well as there are a few people who are waiting to see what the M3 actually has in store for us before putting orders together.

They are TOTALLY different cars- price, performance, size. SLK 350 maybe a better comparison. Sounds odd to have them in the same consideration set. SLK 55 more like M3 'vert. I've driven my friend's SLK 350 for a day (he even encouraged me to put the boot in!) and to be honest I wasn't very impressed. Cheap plastics, cramped (I'm 6'1"), sloooow roof, an auto tranny which was too eager to kick down and probably because the engine seems underpowered, even for a relative lightweight. I'm sure the 55 would be much more fun, but as a daily driver? For me- no way.

Anyone knows what the msport variant would cost? And what could they possibly add to the E92 335 which wouldn't just be cosmetic (body kit, pedals, shifter, steering wheel, anthracite lining etc). The suspension is plenty stiff enough for non-track work.

I would put the CLK 63 against the M3 cabrio.
The SLK55 should be pitched against the Z4M.
Agreed though i found the SLK350 uninspiring as well, that's probably why they are a favourite fashion accessories of a lot of ladies.

Yes Doc i know they are very different cars but i have chosen the two in my list because they are the only coupe's/ roadsters that i would seriously consider buying. The SLK AMG is more of a competition to the porsche Caymen or Boxter. While i love the 335coupe i must say i am willing to sacrifice a bit of trunk space and extra two seats if i can't hit the deal i want with a 335coupe. I also am in a great position to pay more and have myself a SLK AMG.

^Well, if you can afford it, then power to you. In the SLK 55 range surely a 911 is as well. That would be my choice if you couldn't wait for the M3
