Stone chips

Hi Everyone,

In 2 weeks of ownership I already noticed a couple of stops knicks/chips and I drive very conservatively keeping a good amount of distance between cars.

Is this unavoidable? Can we do anything to reduce the road stones/debris from hitting the car?

I don't intend to get a ppf...

Unfortunately, modern paints tend to be vulnerable to stone chips. Like you I do not like or intend to put a film on my cars. I touch up the chips as they happen and call it a day. If you plan to keep the vehicle long term, having a front end resprayed every 3-4 years I feel that is a better option than covering the paint with film. YMMV.

You might consider PPF on just the front 18 inches or so of the hood. That is where most of the rock damage occurs.

I had no protection on my (2 cars ago) Mercedes. Lots of dings. The Lexus that I traded for my X5 was a golfer car at the PGA Championship. When I bought it it already had the PPF on the hood (about 18 inches), as well as the recesses of the door handles and the door edges. I would have never paid for it myself.

When I traded it for the X5, it had no dings in the hood, but several door dings on the drivers side. Better yet, there were no marks on the plastic film. They say they have self healing properties, and it turned out to be true. I did get several rock dings in the windshield, however.

For my X5, I figured that the rock dings would really show up on black paint, so I got the PPF on the first 18 inches of the hood and then did Ceramic Coating on the whole car.

I think your other option would be to use a dent removal / touch-up service periodically. For a big enough rock, I’ll need that, too.

Thanks I have PPF on my M2C front end but still I got hit by rocks/debris on the doors and the rear bumper.

The main issue I have is that I only had the car for two weeks and have a couple of stone chips already.

This seems to keep coming up every now and then. I was about 2-3 weeks in when I found a nice, deep chip on my hood. Since then, you can find them all around the car. It’s very disappointing, since my previous 2017 vehicle (non-BMW) could take a good road beating. As others mentioned, you can go PPF, but I figure that might nick over some time. The solution I’ve accepted is jus fill in the chips as they come. Again, disappointing for the amount paid...these chips and nicks seem to be down to the primer on everything.

I'm not sure I buy the modern car paint story, I am not seeing these issues on other cars. My Mineral White is two months old and I am afraid to imagine what it will look like in three years.

your best bet would be not driving it imo, ppf is your 2nd best option to avoid paint chips.

We just had a couple other thread on this.
Personally, I found it alarming (and disappointing) how easily and how many chips we had on the hood of our 2019 Mineral White X5. So much so that we went out and got PPF installed. (The 2011 MDX with 110k miles we traded had fewer chips)
It has become a bit of an ordeal as the BMW Mineral White touch up paint is NOWHERE NEAR the same color white and now it's under the film.

I purchased my G05 out of state - it's about a 4 hr drive from the dealer home - and I had an appointment with my detailer literally the next morning for paint correction, PPF, and ceramic. Got a huge rock chip front and center of my hood by the time I got back to NY. Like a dagger through the heart...

Luckily my detailer is a magician with touch up paint, and I'd be hard pressed to find the rock chip under the PPF.

I think it's the shape of the X5 that is prone to chips.

I had ppf'd the whole front of my M2C but still got chips on the sides. Someone even lightly rear ended me at 5 MPH and had to get my bumper resprayed.

Looks like damage to cars is unavoidable in the long run.

But the X5 chips easily, I think. My dealer even knicked one of his tools on my X5 bumper before delivery but it is not noticeable till you go looking at it closely.

All the damage done to my cars has been through other people (dealer, idiots driving carelessly and the likes).

After reading a bunch of the comments, the hood seems to be the culprit. I get the whole PPF route, but to have chips at this rate and depth...come on. It’s a BMW thing. My last ‘17 M3 was chip city, but my 2015 F150...nothing. I’ve hit the sides of that truck with just about everything, ride behind dump trucks, and generally disregard protecting the vehicle. No chipping or dings. Same thing goes for the windshield, however, the M3 never had windshield chipping issues.

It’s all cosmetic, and I love my X5, but these minor issues go into consideration with next purchase.

I don't know where I got this from, but I've always thought / knew BMW had the reputation of having "soft" paints. That's why when I bought this one, the very first thing I did was get PPF on it. I've owned several cars before this one, but this was the first time I've done that.

Unfortunately it's just something we deal with. My 2017 X5 at 34,000 looked worse than my Acura TL with 152,000. Nature of the BMW paint. I have PPF on my 2020 X5 due to the experience I had on the 2017 X5, otherwise we have to deal with it and touch up as necessary.

Yeah, it’s unavoidable. I know that’s not much of a comfort considering yours is a brand new car, but dents/dings are an inescapable fact of ownership.

Not sure why there is resistance to PPF. I have it on my 650i & looks great Will get it
on my M50i right after it's delivered next week. I'm doing Suntek partial front which covers the most vulnerable areas. Got a deal $599 installed & their throwing in door cups/edge guards. Why put up with stone chips, ect on a brand new $90K BMW? Also protects against bug staining- we have lovebug seasons here in FL. I say PPF is a no brainer.

It's the cost. Fortunately you got a great price, much lower than other quotes mentioned in this forum. You'll need it in Florida as chips and cracked windshield are unavoidable.

Not sure why you believe Florida would need it more than any other state. In fact our roads are in better shape than any northern states as we don't have lousy winters. So no snow means no sand/salt, ect which leads to tons of chipping. I lived in miserable RI so I know well.

Also no monster pot holes or frost heaves. Why I can go with the 22" 747m wheels. Would NEVER consider it up north.

Your obviously not a gardener. South Florida, where we lived for 10 years, does not have dirt, it's limestone. The weather is great (other than hurricanes) and the roads are flat and very straight. The problem is dump trucks hauling limestone all over the place and it landing on the road surfaces. If it was dirt it wouldn't be a problem but limestone is similar to small rocks; it's all over the place. We lived in Weston which is encircled by a moat that was dug to raise the houses a foot so water would drain away from the foundations. They had to remove the limestone with dynamite which they were doing when we lived there.

Ok, but the entire huge state of Florida is not Weston. I am in the
Gainesville area & do not have that issue. No more than normal truck traffic. Been here 17 years. Without a doubt Florida is a better place for a vehicle than any NE state. in RI many bent rims, front end alignments, front end repaints, fighting corrosion. If I never see the lousy, frozen, pot holed, rusted, pitted, taxed to death North East again it will be too soon.

I have about 9 or so on my hood in 1 year of driving my BSM X6MC 15K miles.

Its a used car the moment its driven off the lot and these chips will not affect the trade in value whatsoever. So enjoy it and stop worrying about it.

Get your front end covered in PPF. When I bought my last new car, I drove it straight from the lot to the place where I had PPF applied and ceramic coated.
