Air Conditioning is very weak

Now that it's warming up in Michigan we've been using the AC more often and have noticed the air coming out with AC on is never truly cold. It's more just like room temp air and it drives me nucking futs. To cool the car down you have to go to max AC for a bit for any cold air to come out.
Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks.

Is your “Temperature of the ventilation”
set to cold? This is a proprietary BMW feature in the iDrive. Check out “Temperature of the ventilation” topic in the manual.

Switch out of the auto mode and use manual temps and fan speed to get more out of the ac. Select your vents to be only at dash and feet.

I have also been underwhelmed with the A/C on my X5. I find it works much better if the rear A/C is turned off, assuming that nobody is sitting back there!

I've also found my G05 AC to be weak. It never seems to really cool off on warm days and same goes for the ventilated seats - they're the crappiest ones I've had in a vehicle to date.

Been a very common complaint with most modern BMWs. My F86 has the worst AC of any car I ever owned and it doesn't help that I live in South Florida.

My car sometimes takes 15+ minutes of freeway driving with MAX AC before I get any cool air. To get cold air it takes even longer. Seat ventilation is useless.

I test drove a 2019 RR Sport the other day which was parked in the sun at 87 degrees and it had instant cold air and actually cooled seats. How wonderful that was!

Before you guys start ripping on the ac, make sure you’ve adjusted the upper vent temp control. It is separate from the regular temp settings in the dash and setting it in the middle results in yucky lukewarm air! This used to be the red/blue wheel between the vents in older bmws but is now buried in the climate menu in idrive 7.

Living in AZ we are just now really touching 100 degrees. I have my climate set to auto and 68. It gets very cold to the point where I will turn the fan down to either setting one or off. So far it has been the best performing AC I have had other than the wife's old KIA. Now I haven't seen 115 yet so more of a test will come later this summer. I do have the ceramic window tint on all my windows which does help with this but the AC puts out very cold air.

yep, we are in Arizona with temp in the upper 90s-100 right now and its been working great. I've read the same thing as what your posting. If your AC is not cold, its your settings in the idrive

I remember the original thread that you quote. However, this morning I cannot get the images to show up for that particular post using Wifi on my iPad or cellular data on my iPhone.

Is there an issue with the forum images at the moment? I thought I had worked through this but the a/c fell short of expectations yesterday.

Look in your manual for “Temperature of the ventilation”. This MUST be set in the iDrive if you want cold AC or blistering heat on the winter.
The G05 is a car your gonna have to read the manual as too much has changed.

So its against the law in most states to text on your phone while driving, do email on your phone while driving and I've driven through some states where its against the law to even hold your phone while driving. Ok, so thank goodness for bluetooth.
However, how did our safety laws permit nested menu systems in our cars? I find myself taking my eyes off the road quite a bit to go through the nested menu layers when trying to find a setting while driving. Can't even imagine how Tesla drivers do it when not in autonomous mode. They don't have any buttons/switches!

The temperature of the ventilation in the upper body area can be adjusted.
The temperature is individually adjusted, e.g. colder toward blue, warmer toward red.

The air flow of the ventilation in the upper body range heats or cools noticeably, depending on the adjusted temperature.
This does not change the set interior tempera‐ ture for the driver and front passenger.

Settings
Via iDrive:
1. "CAR"
2. "Settings"
3. "Climate control"
4. "Heating/ventilation"
5. "Driver" or "Front passenger"
6. "Temperature adjustment"
7. Set the desired temperature:
▷ Toward blue: colder.
▷ Toward red: warmer.

Making it that hard to deal with blue and red rather than a simple dial is frustrating.

These are the last of the old tech German quirks. BMW has them and so does Porsche. I think some engineers pride themself with keeping them in each new redesign. The “Temp of Ventilation” is a meaningless, over complicated feature in a modern climate control vehicle. Only the Germans would do this much like horrible cupholder designs by Porsche. Porsche was always pissed they had to incorporate cupholders and they designed the worst in the industry out of spite. On the 911 forums we call them “drink launchers”.
We can always tell the newbie 911 owner by their infuriating rants on how their grande café latte was thrown onto their passenger front seat of their $130k sports car. .

This is one of my favorite features in all my years of BMW ownership. I find myself reaching for it when in my other cars :-0

The good old rotary dash vent knob. No matter what else is going on in the car, if you want air, cold, hot or a mix, from the center dash vent, just rotate the knob...you can do it without taking your eyes off the road. Oh well, looks like those days are disappearing.

I second that, I really appreciate being able to quickly set temperature of the air blowing directly (previously called stratified air) at me as opposed to changing the temperature of the entire zone.

By burying the controls in iDrive, my guess is that BMW maybe signaling the end of this beloved feature in redesigns

Hmmm, looks like our uploaded pix are too! :-0
Yup, much like a volume knob or manual buttons for primary controls. The full touch screen console is horrible even after you learn it. I suspect Audi might move away from it as nobody likes it.

One thing I’ve noticed now that it’s warmer is that if the car has been sitting in the sun all day and you jump in and are immediately stuck at a bunch of stop lights or stop and go traffic, the AC temp is not very cool. However, as soon as I am driving longer, non-stop distances, the AC gets ice cold.

This is the way the world is going. There are issues with hardware, it cost $, revision changes that impact form, fit and function are not always backwards compatible, physical things wear out, they break, etc, etc.
Software on the other hand, while it has its share of unique issues, can be backwards compatible, doesn't take up physical space, is less expensive when needing to be changed, etc. I mean I get it but.....but, there are some fundamental functions that should never be messed with, like the hazard warning switch, the SOS switch and the freak'n air vent mix rotary knob!

To make matters worse, I'm driving along and decide to change a couple settings in the menu only to have a pop up saying the setting cannot be changed while the car is moving!

Exactly!! And as MystroX5 said as well. I live in Houston and while not extremely hot yet I found the adjustments in the Idrive make all the difference. The red and blue wheel are gone and it is buried in the IDrive. I had to switch out loaners while waiting for my replacement X5 and it was one of the first things I did with every loaner.
