Production timelines?

I just ordered a ‘21 X5 xdrive 40i w/m sport on Nov 30th. I called BMW and they said production is scheduled for week of Dec 27th. Any feedback on timeframe from once in production? My dealer is east coast, PA. The woman said 4-6 weeks from then, which seemed long to me.

Thanks

Thanks for sharing your timeline. So basically 2.5 weeks from when it states in production...because it took about 10 days to actually start when it said starting.

So looks like mid-January if everything holds true.

I never intended on ordering and had my current lease being transferred so I’ll be a one car family for a few weeks 🤦*♂️

Is your order individual merino leather or vernasca? That's a big determining factor

You're good then. My order (no bmw individual options) submitted 14 nov. been in awaiting carrier assignment since Wednesday. Supposed to be delivered to dealership tomorrow but I'll believe it when I see it. Most likely Monday. Regardless, pretty quick turn around

Wow. That is fast. Ultimately it is what it is. Fingers crossed that things move quickly.

For custom ordered cars, they are moving ahead of schedule right now. Check out the recent order threads, seems like they are running a week to two weeks ahead of schedule right now as long as your dealer put your name on your order. Mine was marked as dealer inventory (because I was waiting for the drive event in November) so it didn't start ahead of schedule, but as soon as I had my dealer put my name on the order, it went into production the next day.

I wouldn't be surprised if yours was built before Christmas and you had it by the end of the year since you're on the east coast!

4 to 6 weeks is the general production time frame that most dealers will articulate. Reminder that Plant Spartanburg is the sole plant that builds X5/X6 for all international markets, not only USA.

Pre-COVID, owners waited significantly longer, 8-12+ weeks (waited 12 weeks for mine due to PCD delivery) - sometimes months or a year for delivery - particularly our EU members. Once it starts production it doesn't take more than a day/day and half to complete.

The actual production of the vehicle is quick. But, each dealer is given a certain number of build slots that he can use to either build a car for his inventory, or to satisfy a customer. He doesn't automatically get an extra build slot when he takes an order...he fills one he already has. So, how long it takes can depend a huge amount on whether your dealer has any slots, and when they are scheduled...

Production scheduled means the order has been placed and accepted. Started means they've ordered any parts necessary that aren't built in house. Once the VIN is assigned and the body started, it's only a day or two before it's done. It can sit waiting carrier for over a week, especially if it's around a holiday, as the truckers like time off, too!

If you lived close to the plant, and your dealer had a slot scheduled very soon, it could all be done in a few weeks. If he doesn't have any near-term slots, unless he can trade one with another dealer, it could be many months. If things were slacking off, BMW might assign an 'extra' one to him for a new sale.

I called in again to BMW genius, just to see if they had any times updated. The guy told me it’s slotted for week 1 production, which is basically what they told me before. I guess it showed the order going in on Dec 2nd. I thought it was placed on Nov 30th.

Thanks for sharing.

Seems like 6 weeks is the standard. Anything less is just by chance. I was hoping for a 4 week turnaround but that’s a stretch.

It’s tough waiting but pretty awesome knowing a car is being built specifically for you. Very excited.

Ah, if you're week 1 you won't get it this year then. It seems November must have been a slower month for the factory, as many folks on this forum got pulled in by a week or more. Mine only moved up from 12/7 to 12/4. It's on the way to my dealer now for delivery by end of the week.

The date you order it at the dealer may not be the date that BMW accepts the order (indicated by a production number). When, after that, it actually gets built is dependent on what actual build slots your dealer was assigned (probably months ago). He can fill a slot with something for his lot, or assign it to a person, if its 'sold'. If it's 'sold' to a customer versus the dealer, it may get priority in that week, or if things go well, maybe sneak in the week before.

People in Europe may not get theirs built for many months, depending on what slots their dealer has, then they have to wait for a ship to get it across the ocean.

Once it actually goes into production (VIN assigned/body built), it's very fast with the exception of maybe shipping it out. Production started just means they've ordered the parts...think of it like a reservation for the future activity.

With COVID, being a 1 car family isn't as bad as I thought. I've been 1 car for about 3 weeks now I think. With absolute emergencies, there's always Lyft/Uber.
