PICS! - F95 X5M 6-piston Big Brake Kit install on G05 X5

Yes..... it can be done, and it's not even that difficult. You can upgrade any 2019+ model X5 or X6 with an X5M 6-piston big brake kit.

Make sure you buy an ENTIRE kit:
OEM (F95 / 2020) X5M/X6M Calipers
OEM 395mm drilled/ventilated Rotors
OEM Caliper brackets
OEM Caliper bolts (M12 X 1.5 x 85mm)
OEM X5M brake pad sensor.
OEM X5M dust shields (only required if upgrading from standard brakes)

This is IMPORTANT.... The caliper bolts do not have a part number, and are incredibly difficult to find.

The caliper brackets don't have a part number either. They are sold as a part of the caliper, and because such, they are unavailable to purchase separately.

Installation is easy..... took a little over an hour per side, including bleeding.

Noteworthy items:

1) No need to remove/replace the dust shields on a vehicle with blue (or red) sport brakes (X5M rotors are 395mm, only 10mm larger than sport brakes). On vehicles with standard brakes, you probably want to make sure you get OEM X5M dust shields.

2) OEM caliper bolts are re-used. But, instead of attaching to the caliper, they attach the the BRACKET. Then, the new X5M caliper uses a second set of (X5M specific) bolts, to attach the caliper to the bracket.

G05 X5 calipers - Caliper side-bolts directly to hub
F95 X5M calipers - Caliper top-bolts to bracket. Bracket side-bolts to hub

Note: F85/86 (pre 2019) X5M brake parts are NOT compatible. Do not try to mix/match. The calipers, bolts, and brackets, and rotors are all slightly different. NOTHING will fit.

3) X5M brake pad sensors are different than sport brakes, but they are plug and play with the OEM wiring. No mods needed. But, you must get an OEM X5M brake pad sensor (only on the left side)

4) Hydrolic brake lines match up perfectly. No issues, no mods required.

5) the rotor alignment screws are NOT the same. The holes for them don't line up either, which means you cannot use the screws anymore. No safety issues, but it does make re-installingbthe wheels a little bit more difficult. To do the install, highly recommend a wheel-installation tool that will align the hub, rotor, and wheel. Otherwise, installing the wheel is difficult. Keep the tool in your car for roadside flats... just in case. I did the install without it, because my tool was at home, and it was a PITA.... but it can be done.

6) No coding required (if upgrading from sport brakes. Standard brakes may be different). Pedal feel is identical. Brake "grab" is identical. Car feels no different whatsoever.

But..... it sure looks cool

7) I HIGHLY recommend the eBay seller "testcarsbmw" in Poland. I only purchased the front, but he can hook you up with a full front & rear setup if you like. This guy DOVE THROUGH HOOPS to make sure I had everything I needed. Super great seller. Here's his eBay store: https://www.ebay.com/str/testcarsbmw

Thanks! Exactly $1600 US dollars.... shipped to my door.

That included:

Calipers
Caliper brackets
X5M drilled rotors
Near-new X5M brake pads
X5M brake pad sensor
X5M Caliper bolts

I then spent another $90 on two gold epoxy paint kits, and about $12 on new hi-temp M decals.

Great job - this also confirms that this set up will be bolt on plug and play to all other G series cars such as G20, G30, G11 etc - since the non ///M X5 uses the same hub dimensions as the other G series cars.

What about the rear rotors? They should also have the drilled rotors to match the front.

Ehhhh.... I'm not sure if it's the same as "all" other G series cars. I can confirm, that the F95 and the G05 use the same hubs though.

I opted not to buy the rears, because while the rotor is a few mm larger (and drilled), the calipers are the same style single-piston cast type. It's a pointless upgrade. I still absolutely cannot believe that BMW puts that cheap garbage on the M50i.... much less their flagship X5M. It's mind-boggling to me.

Ironically, F95 X5M rear calipers ARE different than G05 calipers. They mount differently. So, in order to do a rear upgrade, I'd need to buy an entire X5M rear brake system, to get no real "upgrade" at all. The hubs are the same, but I'm not 100% sure if the EPB is the same mechanism. I don't know if the G05 EPB can be retrofitted onto an F95 rear brake system. Quite frankly, it's not worth the $$ to find out.

I've been in contact with several BBK manufacturers, both "high end" and "low end", and to date, no one can give a straight answer on whether or not they actually make a rear BBK for a G05.

The only actual option I've found..... is to retrofit a Rolls Royce Cullinan dual caliper, carbon ceramic rear BBK from the tro-Nik folks in russia...... for about $15,000. Ouch.

I've even been in contact with "less than reputable" Chinese companies like "D2 Racing, XYZ Racing, and K Sport"..... None of which I trust....... all of which "say" they make a BBK...... and NONE of which can actually offer any product descriptions (or a picture) when asked. You would "think" that if a company is advertising a rear BBK for several thousand dollars, they'd at LEAST be able to provide product descriptions, rotor dimensions, or a picture of the completed product installed on a car...... nope. I've asked.

The Chinese will sell their crap to any American dumb enough to believe it. Hence, the reason the "Wish App" continues to operate.

Eventually, a reputable company like Brembo, Stoptech, Rotora, etc will make a 4-piston rear BBK for a G05/F95.... and I'll buy it when they do. Hasn't happened yet though.

The rear electronic parking brake has really put a thorn in brake manufacturers' backsides. It over-complicates everything.

I'm waiting..... patiently.

G05 front calipers are the same fitment as 395mm G11 and G11 is the same as G30 & G20...

I find it very difficult to believe that 3 series, 5 series, 7 series, and the X5..... all use the same hubs.

I may be wrong..... but that seems a bit bizarre.

Do you have a reference for this?

Have a look at the ETK diagrams and with some careful cross referencing it will be revealed.

Also I’m referring to hub dimensions (for brake caliper mounting / offsets) not specifically the “same” hubs. If G05 395mm bolts onto G20, which it does, then X5M will also bolt on.

G05 (sport) is 385mm/4pot, 1 piece caliper. F96/F96 (X5/6M) is 395mm/6pot, 2-piece caliper. Nevertheless, the calipers are interchangeable with all the OEM hardware.

I need to take a look at those.

The chances of a rear BBK being developed for a 3 or 5 series first..... is much higher than one being developed for an SUV. If they are interchangeable? That would work nicely.

Then there is the question of EPB retrofitting though, which complicates things even further

G05 M Sport are 395x36mm - not 385

The major upgrade here though is pad size - significantly larger friction surface from the 6 pots vs the 4 pots!

Great upgrade!

For the rear, you could look at the 380x28 F90 M5 rear brake set up - I can't see why it wouldnt work since the M5 caliper will have the electronic handbrake mech also and there are no handbrake shoes to consider with the brake rotor fitment. It may need a small bracket to allow fitment of the caliper - but wouldnt be a big issue.

I'm pretty sure Tronik have done it.....

EDIT: yes they have..... 380mm ///M rear disc

I assure you, G05 Msport front brake rotors are 385mm

F95 rotors are 395mm. I had both rotors off the car, sitting side by side, and while they aren't "much" larger, they are larger.

https://www.ultimatespecs.com/car-specs/BMW/116586/BMW-G05-X5-M50i.html

I'm aware of Tro-Nik, and I've exchanged multiple emails with them back and forth. I actually wanted to buy "something" from them, because of all the help and technical info they've given me.... but they just didn't have anything I needed.

There are a few rear brake options, but all of them require using a similar single-piston cast caliper. If the X5M had a sealed 4-piston, I would have bought the entire kit. It wasn't worth investing in a full BBK for the rear, for no other advantage than a rotor that is a few mm larger.

Currently, there is no sealed 4-piston BBK for the rear of our vehicles.. EXCEPT.... A full Rolls Royce Cullinan setup with Carbon brakes, and a dual-caliper setup (one small EPB caliper, and one larger sealed 4-piston caliper, per side.) As far as I know, Tro-Nik is the only people selling that as well.

I'm still waiting, and searching. Eventually someone will come out with a 4-piston rear BBK that works with the EPB on both the G05 and F95 platform.

I know you keep saying they are 385mm, but they aren't!

G05 2NH M Sport brakes are 395x36mm - no current G series car uses a 385mm disc in conjunction with M Sport brakes. The sizes across the G series Brembo M Sport brakes are 348mm, 374mm & 395mm - model variant depending (G20 G30 G11 G05 etc).

I have x5 50d, m brakes like 50i. the first replacement of the front pads for 9000 km, the rear for 10000 km. after 5000 km, the front wear is 50% according to the mechanic, the rear is 30%. driving style is active enough but without extreme. I thought about replacing the brakes with more powerful ones. I think of two options: m- performance brakes kit or full brakes kit х5м ф95 / 96. now I am faced with a choice. Can anyone give advice on which brakes are better to choose? the difference in price is about $ 2000. I used to drive x5 f15 with m-performance brakes kit and I liked them - I felt them well, now the brakes in adaptive mode are very soft, in sport mode it is better but not as in f15. I want to return my feelings of reliable brakes

G05 50d will have 395mm 4 pot blue Brembo if it has M Sport brakes.

M Performance brakes will give you the EXACT same caliper body (395mm 4 pot) but just with red paint and dimpled / grooved discs.

Pointless upgrade!
