2021 M50i Exhaust

I feel the 21' exhaust is quiet for a V8. I know people are removing a fuse to keep the flaps open. I guess the 21' model won't stay open in sport plus, you need to be driving over 40mph

Any other options to improve exhaust note. I drive a lot of highway for work, so don't want any drone.

The flaps are active always yes, basically open when you are on throttle and closed when cruising/idling.

If you pull the plugs when they are open, they will stay open. I just used BimmerLink to open them and then unplugged. I ran that for a bit and didn't really notice a big difference.

Also consider there is a significant amount of sound deadening in the vehicle, it's much louder outside than you would think. I noticed when i had the fuse box cover off after i installed my hitch it sounded much louder.

I have a 50i with M-Sport exhaust, which is more almost the same as m50i. I've also been looking at options trying to figure out what can be done.

Dahler has an exhaust that sounds really good, with manual control of flaps, but it's $5k.

Not sure if the US exhaust is the same as the European? If it has a central resonator and secondary cat then have them cut out and a straight pipe inserted in their place. Like you, I desperate to do something to improve the V8 sound track and was waiting for an aftermarket system but in the end I took the plunge and had the res and cat removed. It’s more than satisfied the want for sound and saved a king’s ransom. No drone at all and plenty of pops on the over run when in sports plus only.

I’ll have to check I don’t recall seeing a resonator on my 2019.

Permanently opening the exhaust valves doesn't do much

Both US and Euro spec V8s have resonators.

Euro spec also has OPFs in the exhaust.

Wow I found the perfect forum for my question.
I'm looking for a little more exhaust sound, no drone.

Anyone try this in US?

central resonator and secondary cat then have them cut out and a straight pipe inserted in their place.

Do others think this mod is worth it? I'm reading that opening the valves doesn't affect the sound much.

Debating on if I should purchase the bimmerLink app.

My 2021 M50i sounds very strong on cold start up. I'd like to have that at all times.

Yup, that they do. My 50i is the same, sounds amazing. That's a bit of trickery with engine tuning to get the cats to warm up quicker. Sadly won't sound like that once they are warmed up.

OK, I get that, thanks for the explanation.

I'm seriously considering removing the resonator on my 21. Any downsides?

I believe some other threads cover this and someone reported drone in the cabin. I used BimmerLink code to open the flaps and then physically disconnected them while open (car was running idle and I did some practice rounds). I’ve noticed a subtle difference enough to leave them open. I’ve emailed Dahler but as stated above they run just about $5k.

I haven’t found much on folks using other mufflers but it is an M performance exhaust so from a performance standpoint, not sure I’d want to give that up for sound.

I had zero luck getting Dahler to respond after multiple attempts. Wish someone else would make something.

I received a quote from them a week after my inquiry. $4500 plus. Additionally, here is the kicker, they don’t have a company who can ship it on the palette it comes with. I would have to find my own solution for pickup and delivery from them.

Ouch and double-ouch. $4500 is pretty darn steep for an exhaust.

I'm going to muffler shop to get an idea or their perspective on removing the resonator.

Get the resonator removed and replace with an X pipe. Any muffler shop should be able to do this.

Update:

They can ship but the recipient must be a business for a palette. Seems easy enough if you want delivery to a muffler shop for install. That said, shipping won’t be cheap. They have a drive by clip and will post it at some point.

Agree with you. I would like a good aftermarket exhaust but not at that price.

I did this to my 2019 X5 40i.
It sounded great at start up and the I got on the throttle.
But normal driving had a lot of drone, my wife hated that, I was ok with it.
