The car was dropped at BMW this morning (no loaners to be had, of course), and I just got a call an hour and a half later from the service consultant asking if I disconnected the "High Voltage Disconnect"... said the technician wanted him to ask me. When I asked him what that was, he said something about orange cables under the hood. I'm ashamed to say I've never even been under the hood in the few weeks I've had the car, so I didn't know exactly what he was talking about. Wondering what he may have found that would cause them to ask that.

My guess would be that they have never heard or seen this issue and they’ve fishing based on the diagnostics tree they work off of. Until BMW issues a service bulletin, each dealer will spend hours of diagnostic time coming to the same conclusion (if it’s the same issue as OP)

Just got the yellow check engine light on my 50e. Car doesn't give me any information. Seems to be operating normally. We're going to bring it in tomorrow. It was delivered to me May 18th. Built not long before, probably Week 18 I think. Thanks for sharing this information. I'm scared to hear what they tell me...
Oh no.. same build week. Likely same problem. Get a loaner on day 1, a nice one.

One of the risks you unfortunately take when you buy a version 1.0 car after a refresh...

Just got the update.... they told me there is some kind of Electronic Communication Issue which they can't pinpoint or troubleshoot alone. They told me BMW NA is going to log into the car remotely to try and troubleshoot because the dealer doesn't know what it is. When I dropped the car off, I asked for the error code/s once they read it. He sent me a 3 page report and he said it was a weird anomaly, but I don't see a Code P0D9A which was referenced by others in the thread. He said repeatedly that it's under warranty and BMW NA is paying for it and they'll do what they need to do to get it right.

He told me that he hopes it's a SW issue so he'd have it back to me within days. If a HW issue, it'll depend on the part needed and it's availability. If it's not available, could be months. He didn't commit because he doesn't know.

I refused the Enterprise rental. I told them I'd like a late model X5 as a loaner while they hung on to my beautiful brand new $90K+ car. I told him I can wait a few days for the loaner.

Taking it one step at a time and trying not to get too upset... it won't change the initial outcome. I'm supposed to hear from the SA again by tomorrow COB. I'll update the thread...

Update: I just spoke to my case manager and it looks like they are trying to get the part as soon as possible. It kind of let me know that a full refund or buyback is practically out of the question. Led me to believe the only option right now is to wait for the car to be repaired and then I can ask for some kind of compensation but once the car is ready; otherwise they don't know the extent of the "damage" meaning 1 or 2 months without the car.

The dealership that sold you the car should have provided you a loaner right? Unless they do not care about any future businesses with you

It took them 4 days and 12 calls from me to get me into a loaner. Either way, there's not too much BMW competition in my area, so I'm stuck with them... and they know it. Maybe BMW NA should be on top of the brand and scold dealers like this one..

Latest update (6/27):

Spoke with SA moments ago... BMW NA instructed them to do 3 battery cycles. That involves charging the car, then depleting the battery 3 times, then call them back. I asked how they deplete, and he said they drive it. The thought of a technician running errands in my car for 42 miles 3 times doesn't thrill me.

I logged into the app several times today to see where the car was and if it was charging. Every time it showed that it was connected to the charger and was fully charged. I have doubts it was depleted. If it was, it's quite the coincidence that car was in the same place with the same full battery every time I checked. I'm not optimistic that this is the solution, but at least they have to check the box.

The SA is out tomorrow, so I'll get back with him on Thursday to see where things stand. Luckily, they finally have a 2023 X5 loaner waiting for me (they don't have 2024 X5 loaners in the fleet), so I'll swing by and grab it in the morning.

6/28 update: They gave me an iX. They don't have an X5 for me at the moment and I don't have a Level 2 charger at home. Thankfully I don't HAVE to use the car (we have others), but happy to have it around in a pinch. Also, the iX is weird and I don't like the interior. :-)

My luck ran out at 2100 miles. Yellow check engine light on X5 50e. BMW in Charleston cannot see for 2 weeks!!!
They claim it’s safe to drive unless light is red. From what I’ve read, I’m not so sure. No loaner for 4 weeks!!
Car seems to be operating ok for now.
Took delivery in late April.

I'm interested in this one to do on my own IF this happens to me.

I’m quite concerned BMW isn’t ALL over this! I would of expected them to stop production and use those parts, if good, to make this issue go away immediately!!!

I’ve got a round trip to Florida coming up, 1,000 miles, at the end of the month and I really don’t want to be thinking about this…

Agreed that it is concerning. I’m just over 300 miles and about to take a road trip for the holiday weekend.

Would love a sense of % pervasiveness of the issue. I’m assuming it’s a low but clearly non-zero likelihood we would be affected. But even 5% would be pretty scary.

Good news... techs don't think my problem is related to others in this thread. They suspect it has something to do with a charger the car was put on before I took delivery - which actually explains some other stuff that happened. They've cleared everything out for now and told me if it happens again to make sure to come in with 40-80% battery charge and consider bringing in the charger I use so they can do a full test.

I'm taking the car on a 750 mile road trip this weekend, wish me luck!

Since I cleared the engine light last week, ive done over 600 miles no issues since so for those taking the road trip don't worry. It won't get you stranded or anything.

I can confirm that theory. After I cleared the light, it took about 2 weeks to come back. Maybe BMW is being extra careful or they just have no clue and it's better not to drive the cars?

Are we thinking this is isolated to certain production weeks? Been waiting about 5 weeks since ordering and giving me 2nd thoughts.
