Aftermarket tires... double roadside assistance?

In the event of a flat and no spare available, BMW Roadside Assistance will tow my car to the nearest BMW dealership. But if my car is using aftermarket tires, would I have no choice but to buy one or more very expensive BMW approved tires? I'm thinking the best way to deal with this is to get a CAA (AAA) membership so I have more flexibility with the towing. Anyone doing this?

Insurance that covers towing could work too. Or you could order the replacement tire to the dealership.

Is there a reason you don’t carry a spare?

Roadside assistance through your auto insurer is what I'm doing. I have a spare tire but you never know when you're going to need assistance.

The BMW spare apparently doesn't fit over the M Sport brake. Even if I could carry a spare, I have no idea where I'd put the flat since the spare compartment doesn't fit a full-size wheel. My X5 is always loaded with kids stuff (car seats, stroller, etc.). I have no idea where I'd put a flat 22" wheel.

Its a spare, just for emergencies. I wouldn't worry about what to do with the full size if you get a flat. You figure that out afterwards. Better to have it and get out of a bad situation quickly especially if family is involved. The spare does fit over the M Sport brakes, not sure where you heard it doesn't. When you get the 22s a space saver spare is included. X5M even has the same spare available. What happened to yours?

That is just bad information that BMW Canada has been pushing for years. There is no problem with it fitting over the MSport brakes. They just don't want to sell it for some reason.

Missed you were a neighbor to the North, explains the false info. Find yourself a spare, order from the US if you need to. Worth the safety and peace of mind having one.

Spare wheels and tires cost a lot more than a can of sealant to the manufacturer and people have been convinced that they'd rather have run flats or fix a flat cans. Plus, to be fair, a lot of people either couldn't replace a wheel and tire on the side of the road, or don't know how. Especially since most wheels are put on with all the "ugga duggas" of an impact gun. Sometimes even with a legit breaker bar it can be tough to get lugs off, let alone the little tools that most cars come with. And not many people are keeping their Milwaukee M18 High Torque in their vehicles with a charged battery.

Perhaps but has nothing to do with why they won't sell the space saving spare and make up stories about why.

Yeah, that part is weird. Maybe there's a regulation reason or something like that? Who knows. Maybe the full size spare Timmy Ho's takes up that space? Who knows.

They have been doing it since 2018 when the G05 came out. They sell them for other series but for the X5 they say it won't fit over the MSport brakes. We have had a number of members that had to buy it in the states due to it.

You can also order a spare and the necessary changing tools from this place, many here on the forum have done so.. ..they include a spacer for those who have the M Sport calipers.

Yeah... Order it from tire rack or wherever, send it to the dealer. If you're paying to put a tire on the dealership won't care that much, they might give you a little grief but you just have be reasonable about it. They're obviously not going to be able to warranty the tire but they shouldn't have any issues putting the tire on.

.. ..and, last time I checked, the tires from the BMW dealer were very close to any price on the internet...much to my surprise. If this is still the case, buying from the dealer will be to your advantage since they honor their work when buying from them.

Here is what I found just now when comparing OEM tires for a 2021 40i with 20" tires.. .. When you factor in the cost of having someone other than who you bought the tires from install them, it would be close to a wash or at least not worth not having a dealer order and install them. Sometimes I've seen where they're having a sale as well.

Here is the link to get to BMW Tires, follow the prompts to get pricing from your local dealer or the dealer of your choice.. .. https://www.bmwtirecenters.com

Agreed, I think the only reason you would do something like shipping a tire tomthe dealer is if you were on a tire that they didn't offer. Like switching to the Nittos on the 22s.

All that said, this is all a lot of hassle to use BMW's towing vs just having it part of your insurance or AAA.
